Lighting Reef BBQ this Friday from 10am to 12noon. John Cannon is picking up the BBQ from the shed. Ray, Maurice and Glen have put up their hands to help. A reminder for all members to sign-in & out, at the front office of the school.
Ted mentioned that our club has been asked to add an extra Easter market day and that it was agreed it was not feasible for our club to do so
National Youth Science Forum, Cathie reported that all students interviewed have been selected to attend.
Patti Cotton and Adrian Schoo have agreed to be guest speakers at a public presentation in Rochester, our contribution to support the local Rotary Club. Adrian will present on Monday 16 September at 7pm at the Rochester hospital. Patti’s presentation will be organised on her return from sunny Queensland.
The launch of the Science and Technology Challenge is at midday today at the South East College. This program is supported by the Rotary Club of Bendigo South.
Guest Speaker
The guest speaker was Katherine Chernov. Katherine is a regular stall holder at the Australia Day and Easter markets. Her grandparents had a farm at Ballendella. She has fond memories of visiting Northern Victoria as a child.
As a fourteen year old Katherine was a very disengaged student at an all girls school in Melbourne when she came across a Rotary Exchange student from Africa. She became very interested in Africa, the history, the wildlife and the culture. This awakened in Katherine an interest in becoming an exchange student herself.
Katherine made contact with the Caulfield Rotary Club and was invited to attend a breakfast meeting as a guest. The application process including the writing of applications and preparing and making speeches was outlined. She was very motivated to work through these processes such that she was eventually successful in gaining an exchange to Canada.
Katherine was welcomed by her host family in Hamilton, Ontario and proceeded to embrace the life of the school and all that Canada had to offer. She was transformed in her learning by the approach of the school which raised her interest level and encouraged her to ask questions and research subjects further in her own time. She had the good fortune to meet other exchange students and this awakened further interest in other countries and cultures. The world was becoming smaller for her.
Katherine was taken by two captions on the Rotary banner, "Making an Impact" and "Giving ordinary people an opportunity". The Rotary Club and the whole exchange experience built her confidence because people believed in her. On return to Australia she turned things around, completing Year 12 and eventually graduating with an Arts degree from Monash University. When she hits a fork in the road the Rotary symbol reminds her of her emotional development and the importance of trusting her instincts. For, Katherine Rotary saved her life.
This was a very moving address and serves to reassure us as members of Rotary that our service and connection with the community can and does make a huge difference. Katherine was officially welcomed as a friend of Rotary. We look forward to staying in touch with her not just as a stall holder but also as a source of inspiration for our work.
Judy, Evelyn, Sally and Toni attended the “Introduction to Islam” and dinner on Wednesday evening at the Bendigo Community Centre.

The 4F’s committee would like to announced that the monthly get togethers will continue with the first one for this Rotary’s year being held at Pat Pub the Rising Sun on Thursday 22nd August @ 6 for 6.30pm. The Women’s Jamshod Dinner is on Saturday 17th August at the Cathedral Hall. Those wishing to attend please let Toni know son she can confirm numbers with Kaye Graves from Bendigo Community Health. Ladies requested to wear bright colourful clothes and jewellery and bring along a scarf. (instructions and demonstrations for folding and wearing of scarfs is planned for the evening}.

Photos from the science and Technology Challenge conducted today at the Bendigo South East Secondary school today. Approximately 200 students from 8 local Regional schools participated. It was very inspiring watching the students undertake several engineering and mathematical challenges.
