Stan had just returned and chaired the meeting. We welcomed Daniel and Daryl Giles, our guest speakers, visiting Rotarians Julia and Alison from Echuca, and Bernadette who accompanied George.

President’s and directors’ report

A presentation was delivered at Rochester hospital to support the club. Although a small audience that was strengthened by the full board of the Rochester club, it is a start and gives the club opportunity to go from there. Patti Cotton has offered to present next and has been put in contact with the club.

George has volunteered together with Maurice to assist organizing the district conference. Thank you to both.
Police legacy BBQ: Saturday 21 Sept at 7am at the Wade Street oval, Golden Square, and Bruce asked to be there by 6.30am if possible
Rotary Clubs of Bendigo Strathdale and Bendigo have a joint meeting on Tuesday 1^st October at the Bendigo Club, Park Street, 6.00pm for 6.30 start. The Guest Speakers will be Solomon Cameron and Linda Beilharz. Solomon is raising money for ‘Angel Flight’ who supported his trip around Australia.
Will 2 Walk Bendigo 2019 on Friday 11 October. Join the DG on this charity walk. You can select your preferred distance.
Pink Evening at Evelyn’s place on Friday evening 11 October.
Marist College Bendigo Mock Interview Panel: Thursday October 31 and Friday November 1 with morning tea and lunch provided. Please respond by 7 October if you can assist (Details at the end of the Bulletin).
Next board meeting is on Tuesday 24 September. We look forward to next week when many have returned from their travels.

Guest Speakers

The guest speakers this week were Daniel Giles and his father, Daryl. Daniel was diagnosed with autism at the age of two. This early diagnosis was helpful in identifying the necessary steps which needed to be taken in order for him to lead a fulfilled and independent life. He has achieved great things having graduated from university with a degree in Graphic Design and is now working in a part time capacity at the Catholic Education Office. Daniel was awarded an OAM in 2017 for his voluntary work in support of people with a disability and the disadvantaged.

Daniel and Daryl outlined the family's journey towards independence. Small steps involving him doing his share of cleaning and gardening had to be taken. Daniel learned a lot when he had to take responsibility for his disability pension funds. This involved shopping, paying his own way on family outings and paying for his school fees. There were many set backs along the way including finding ways to deal with bullying. Daniel finds the sensory overload he experiences in Supermarkets and on public transport difficult.

Daniel was supported in shared accommodation during has time of study at university. He is currently living in rental accommodation and has had to learn all the ways to be a good neighbour. He needs to monitor his time on line. This is something Daryl supports him with. These are all steps along the way in helping Daniel to live independently or as was suggested interdependently.

Daniel has made friends and has been involved in all the necessary tasks in setting up house such as connecting utilities and buying furniture. He has made friends and interacts positively in the workplace. Even his cooking skills have improved. He has accessed the advantages of on line grocery shopping. The next step now is for Daniel to own a bigger townhouse or apartment.

Daniel is a talented photographer. His story was a very moving example of how a family working together can achieve great things. As Daryl said this involves "tough love". BBQ opportunity.... Victoria Police Legacy bike ride. Breakfast at Golden Square Wade Street Oval on Saturday the 21st of September.

6.30 am start. We will be serving Egg and bacon rolls as well as the usual fruit, cereal, juice and yogurt.

Just a note to clarify the social event being held at our place on Sat 5th October.

Open to all members and partners to attend.

Location: 11 Regent street Strathfieldsaye. ( off Tannery lane) Commencing between 6pm and 6:30pm.

Please bring along a plate/platter of food to share. Finger food, either hot or cold. Main or sweets. We will be able to keep food warm.

Bring along something to drink also. The whole idea is a social event where members and partners can socialise without any hassles of

being seated and not being able to mingle An idea on numbers closer to the day would be great.
