Great to see everyone involved in the forum on Wednesday and a good followup to the Board meeting the night before. A few things that came out of those:
The Goldfields Cluster decided that it was impossible to plan any “significant” project for the Rotary Centenary next year given fundraising uncertainty, but agreed a big effort should be made in 2025 when it will be 100 years of Rotary in Bendigo on 30 July that year. I hope we can start planning early, decide on a major project that will be a long term benefit to the City and start raising the funds. For next April when Rotary Downunder 100 years happens we will hopefully be able to celebrate as part of many events being planned. The Cluster adopted a project that a number of Rotary Clubs in perhaps a similar position have, “100 Random Acts of Kindness”. So Bruce Fraser has agreed to be the scorekeeper and will record them. It’s not just the Clubs “acts of kindness” its any member that undertakes something that helps someone out for no reward except it makes you feel good. Tell Bruce, no names necessary, just that a Rotary member did this…….
The Board decided that as we are not that short of funds we would make a donation to one of the 8 signature projects promoted by the original Centurions, the Rotary Club of Melbourne. If you haven’t already, have a look.
We are going to look closely at the Safe Families, End Trachoma and Child Trauma Relief projects and make decisions at the next Board meeting. Have a look yourself, tell a Board member what you think.
Now October is “End Polio Now” month. This is perhaps Rotary Internationals greatest project and close to success. It has raised money by organizing big community walks around 24 October each year. This year that’s not possible but instead Rotarians are encouraged to walk a bit each day, get people to sponsor you and raise some money.
I am up for it. I will be walking as often as time permits over the next month, with a goal of minimum 10 kms a week. Sponsorships are very welcome. I have a fitbit and runkeeper to track me and keep a record.
The Board also agreed to fund some RYLA applicants if we can find some, so please see if you can identify someone and let Cathie know.
Bendigo Creek Cleanup. The chance to get out for a walk in a different part of Bendigo and do some Community service that we are all missing. Stew Annan will be in touch next week to gather volunteers. I have checked with the City and the Catchment Authority and they said go for it. When we find a day that the weather looks good we will be in touch. Start about 10 am and coffee when we finish. Instructions will be provided.
Rotary events coming up:
24 October – World End Polio Now Day
28 October 6.50 am Business Leaders Breakfast with David Landgren
You need to book online for all these events. There is no cost.
More profiles for Bruce and the Bulletin please
Have a great week Ted

Joke of the week:
Quote of the Week
A kid who picks up trash likely won’t grow up to be an Adult who Litters trash.
In the forests and mountains, animals do not leave trash. Humans Do. Please behave like animals
Seven out of the 10 bits of litter we find on our pavements and roads are food related. And with all this trash to choose from, the pigeon, rat, fox and gull population has spiraled.
Following a positive show of hands at our last Club zoom meeting, we plan to conduct a Bendigo Creek walk and rubbish collection on Friday next week (9 Oct).
Overall plan:
The section of creek targeted will be 3.5km between the northern end of Lake Weeroona and the Botanic Gardens at White Hills.
Start time 10:30am with plan to reach the midway point between 11 and 11:15.
We will divide into two groups with one leaving from the Lake Weeroona end and one from the White Hills end, and then walking to a midway point close to the intersection of Ruby St/Boulevard intersection (see map).
Along the way we will collect rubbish into bags. At the midway point we will have a trailer to take it away after sorting (recyclable, non-recyclable).
Post clean-up, as an option, some may want to stroll back to the Coffeeman van at Lake Weeroona.
Other points:
Safety first - Gloves strongly recommended. Pick-up stick is a good idea also if you have one. Social distancing and masks.
Target area is either side of the pathway without getting into any really long grass or getting too close to the creek itself. Also, in some places the other side of the creek can be easily accessed and traversed, albeit without a paved path.
Depending on direction walked, getting to/from cars will need some coordination so that some of us don’t become stranded on completion. We will work out a plan once we know numbers.
There isn’t a huge amount of rubbish along this section of the creek, but I know we agree cleaning-up small amounts is still worthwhile.
Husbands, Wives, Partners all welcome of course.
Please let me know at latest by next Tuesday 6th if you can participate. Once I know numbers, I’ll liaise to work out a plan for cars between each end of the route.
Time to Write Your “Member Behind the Badge” profile
I don’t know about you, but I am missing the more personal side of meeting fellow Rotarians.
So, we are looking for people to write a little 250 word personal profile so we can publish one a week
in the Bulletin, to bring us all a bit closer again. Even if you’ve presented a Life history in the past there’ll
be new members who didn’t hear it, or things that have changed in your life. Below are some suggestions.
You don’t have to answer them all if you don’t want too. So while you’re reading this, jot down some notes and send them in to brucefraser8@bigpond.com
Tell us:
Where you were born, who your parents were and what work they did.
Where did you go to school and what subjects did you like best (and least).
What was your first job? (and your 2nd? 3rd? 4th?).
What events or who has had an influence on the type of person you are today.
Where did you meet the most important person/people in your life?
What’s your favourite holiday spot?
What are the passions that have stayed with you all your life?
Tell us the best joke you ever heard, or just look for one on YouTube. (attach a link)
