Presidents Report

PP Graeme was leaving for Timor Leste with Mayor Margaret O’Rourke, and BMFC members Heather Ridge and Milton Long on Tuesday 9^th July. He has a very full agenda with a community consultation (60 persons attending) to identify the strategic priorities for the next 3 years (current and planned projects), scholarship review and interviews and for our club the knitting program and distribution of the goods and the usage of the vehicle (and kitchen). We look forward to his report on his return.

Bendigo Sandhurst Changeover at Boundary Hotel

Despite the last-minute venue change from the Lake View Hotel and the transfer to the Boundary Hotel, the event went to plan and was very successful with a lot of fellowship. Formality was kept to a minimum. The staff at the Boundary Hotel were very attentive and professional and worked hard to make the function run as smoothly as possible. Thank you to the Changeover committee for all your hard work, to ensure the afternoon was successful. A special thankyou to the limping Judy Miatke for bringing along the Dutch regalia for table decorations (wooden clogs, etc).

A big thank you to Paul Henderson as the media guru. Photos on Facebook are terrific; even some overseas friends have commented on them.

Adrian and I have attended several changeovers over the last couple of weeks and we have three more to go. These include the Rotary Club of Rochester, Echuca-Moama and Bendigo Strathdale.

We congratulate our newest PHF’s Maurice Woodburn & Peter Rainey, and our new PHF Sapphires, Doug Lougoon, John Cannon and Kevin Reade. It was lovely to see a number of family members present to see them receive their awards.

Laine Graham, RYLA Recipient of 2018

Members enjoyed a thought-provoking presentation form Laine about his experiences during the RYLA course. Laine completed Year 12 last year at Catherine McAuley College in Bendigo and is studying Engineering this year at Monash University. At eighteen years of age Laine was the "spring chicken" of the group which undertook a week long range of activities at Camp Oasis, one-hour east of the Melbourne CBD.

The RYLA course has been most significant in Laine identifying the key values which anchor him in the way he leads his life. The organisers had a good balance of challenging and supportive activities for participants to filter the values which had the most meaning for them. Laine places great value on being adaptable, this encapsulates for him many other values. In some instances, participants were challenged in areas of vulnerability. The focus group sessions were a wonderful opportunity to build friendships and process some of the more challenging content.

The RYLA experience exposes participants to important social issues. The session on Aboriginal history and culture made a significant impact. Many were challenged to face an issue which when presented through the lens of sixty thousand years of history demands a response from leaders. The theme of "being challenged by choice" enabled each individual to participate in an individual way.

Laine was most grateful to the club for his sponsorship. He remarked that he is already aware that with the busy schedules of life that this is the sort of opportunity which doesn't come along very often. Members were most appreciative of Laine's presentation and lingered on for quite a while chatting with him. (Author: Jim Rolfe).

Events & Reminders

PP Graeme and Barbara travelled to DIK in Melbourne with clothing very generously donated by Wayne Hedrick, proprietor of Uniforms Plus.
Rachelle Fisher from Girton Grammar School will be presented with a cheque for $2,000 at a school assembly; these funds will support their project in Thailand/Cambodia. Adrian will be undertaking this presentation at 9am on Friday 19^th July. All Rotarians are welcome to attend.
Rotary Leadership training is planned for 28^th July in Bendigo. Ted & Toni are interested in attending. It is open to all, as it’s a great learning opportunity. The previous seminar was cancelled due to lack of numbers; at least 10 participants are required to make it viable.
The outdoor Jackets have been ordered and the embroidery should be complete at the end of the week and the jackets will be distributed at the next meeting.
The Annual Report for 2018-2019 is available; it’s a very good summary of our activities over the past year.
Lightning Reef Primary School: - on Friday 19^th July from 9am to 11.30am, we are supporting Inner Wheel ladies with sandwich-making for students and staff.
Board meeting on Tuesday 16 July, 5pm, at St Aiden’s board room.
Morning Tea with the DG: Grant Hocking will be conducting one of his sessions promoting opportunities for clubs to discuss issues in a relaxed environment. The venue is the ‘Boardwalk’ in Bendigo on Thursday, 18^th July at 10.30am.

RecLink BBQ

Thanks to Paul Henderson for organising the food and the Rotary manpower for the RecLink BBQ last Wednesday and all those members that attended. Thanks to the mechanical marvels Glen and John who managed to put the Barbecue together, and a final contribution from Maurice.
