Guest Speaker

Venerable Moonieinda was our guest speaker this morning speaking about the Karen Culture & Social Support Foundation (KCSS).
Currently there are approximately 230 Karen families, and a total number of 2300 of members of the community in all; most of these Burmese people have arrived to Australia via refugee camps in Thailand. Due to the difficulties of re-settling into Australia, Venerable Moonie and the Karen community have commenced a building program to help new arrivals transition into the Australian community, as they are faced with many problems such as financial, housing and language issues.
The KCSS foundation purchased suitable land in Eaglehawk in 2015 and were given a building permit in 2016, and now that following clearing of land has been finished, the structural part of the project can commence.
Stage 1 has commenced with the Wright builders given the contract to build a four-bedroom house. This house will provide temporary accommodation for new arrivals until suitable rental properties can be found.
Stage 2. Future plans include the building of two large halls, a kitchen, office space, a toilet block and packing spaces. These buildings are planned to facilitate community functions, English language classes and various other activities.
Venerable Moonie has stated that expertise and assistance would be welcome, whether that be in the form of financial assistance or help with Project Management for Stage 2 of KCSS project. He also mentioned assistance by volunteers to help with English Language classes would be greatly appreciated.
Financial fund raising has been of limited success so far, with a project called “Buy a Brick” ($50 per brick), raising around $4,000 to date.
Those wishing to help in any way can email Venerable Moonie at moonieindae@kcssf.org.au or if you wish to Buy a Brick for the Karen Culture & Social Support Foundation, can visit their web site.

From Maurice Woodburn...
Just a note to clarify the social event being held at our place on Sat 5th October.
Open to all members and partners to attend.
Location: 11 Regent street Strathfieldsaye. ( off Tannery lane) Commencing between 6pm and 6:30pm.
Please bring along a plate/platter of food to share. Finger food, either hot or cold. Main or sweets. We will be able to keep food warm.
Bring along something to drink also. The whole idea is a social event where members and partners can socialise without any hassles of
being seated and not being able to mingle An idea on numbers closer to the day would be great.

3...
A man ordered Chinese takeaway from a local place.
He had just been to pick it up when, as he was driving home, he suddenly heard the bags rustling.
He wondered what on earth the sound was and if something had gotten in the bag!
He thought he could see a little pair of eyes peering out at him.
He was driving so he leaned forward, picked up the bag and put it on the passenger seat.
Suddenly he heard more rustling and little eyes looking out from behind the prawn crackers.
He thought it had to be a rat or a mouse or something, so he carefully pulled the bag down and there it was … A Peking Duck!
