The guest speakers for the meeting were Rod Spitty and Paul Gibbons from the Rotary Club of South Bendigo. Rod outlined for members the history and operation of the local Science and Engineering challenge for year ten students. The challenge started sixteen years ago and is a collaboration between LaTrobe and Newcastle Universities and the Rotary Club of South Bendigo. The program aims to lift the profile of Maths and Science in schools and to increase the possibility of university graduates eventually returning to work in regional areas.

Industry and Business contribute to the costs which amount to about $10K each year. A project committee of the club oversees the organisational matters required to bring eight schools and 250 students together each year. This year the Challenge will be held on August 23rd. In addition this year Bendigo will host the National Challenge on October 28th and 29th. This will bring 500 visitors to Bendigo.It is always fascinating to watch the ways in which the students use problem solving skills to tackle a problem which they have not seen before. 

 

Rod noted the benefits of the year ten students engaging with final year university students who are involved as supervisors on the day.It has become noticeable in recent years that students who previously participated are returning to assist. Participating students are given a letter which recognises their involvement and which can be used as part of their resumes. In total some four thousand students have been involved over the years. Costs to schools are kept to a minimum in recognition that costs for travel and replacement teachers are incurred by each school.

 

It was inspirational to hear the details of this wonderful initiative of our neighbouring club. We especially wish them every success in the hosting of the National Challenge. We congratulate Rod and Paul on providing such a wonderful learning opportunity for the students of the region and we thank them for being our guests at such short notice.
