President Report
President Report  Mar  24
Hello Rotarians,
Next Tuesday, Board meeting Pat’s Pub at 5 pm. Board members let’s know if you would like to join via Zoom.
Graeme Lynas is still in St Vincents in Melbourne as I write this but hopes to be back in SJoG soon. A long 7 hour operation included some complications on 13 March and then the surgeon had another go to on Thursday the 18th. Graeme was in a lot of pain, but he is in our prayers that he recovery is underway.
Ben Boxshall gave an informative presentation of his companies work, Wood4Good, in creating small forests on local farms, that have sustainable futures with management and progressive harvesting. Watch out for Phil’s report later in the Newsletter.
If you would like to nominate either a member or a local community member to receive a Paul Harris Fellowship then you can do so by completing a nomination form. Email or call me and I will get one to you. PHFs are the highest award a member can receive and are awarded to members who have made a significant contribution to Rotary through their work for the club, district and/or Rotary International, or another field of service to the community.  A community nominee must have made a significant contribution to the community through their (voluntary or remunerated) work within their chosen field of endeavor. The Selection sub committee will meet again after Easter to consider nominations, we have a couple already.
Stewart Annun has suggested another working bee to clean up another section of our waterways and given last meeting indicated a lot of interest, we will come up with a possible day and location next Wednesday. We are thinking probably after a Wednesday breakfast in April.
Congratulations to Barb and Judi who have both become Grandparents recently.

Now we are back together for regular breakfasts, can I ask all members to think about people in their circle of friends, colleagues, acquaintances, whose lives would be enriched, by being invited to join a great bunch of people who choose to try to improve the lot of those in our community, who have less opportunities. Bring them to a Wednesday breakfast.  Our vision this year “Rotary opens Opportunities”
Have a great week      cheers Ted.

Guest Speaker

Guest Speaker- Ben Boxall, Co- Founder and Director “Good 4 Wood’
Ben spoke about the changes in the forestry industry, moving from harvesting native forest timber to using commercial native timber. This a big challenge for the industry and we need to move quickly to establish plantations so we can meet the domestic demand for wood. At the same time, we have the impact of climate change specifically a hotter and drier climate. There has also been a marked reduction in biodiversity, we also need to reduce emissions, increase the drawdown of Carbon (from the atmosphere to the soil) and increase the use of renewable resources.

These challenges have caused a re-think about the way we do agriculture, specifically for forestry ways of growing forests that can address the issues outlined above. The aim is to produce forests that are cultured and curated to over time become sustainable forests that add to diversity, store carbon and provide for our timber needs. Ben showed an example of a forest planted on degraded/ eroded land and the transformation is remarkable.  The plantation starts in the traditional way with dense plantings, once the planation is 10 years old it is ‘selectively harvested’, thinning out the plantation which allows for the development of an under storey and more mature timber trees. The forest continues to grow and develop, larger tress are removed but developing trees take their place. Ensuring the long term capture of carbon.
Is this a Swan Hill Goldfish??

Jokes

A man was driving down the road when a policeman stopped him

The officer looked in the back of the man’s truck and said, “Why are these penguins in your truck?”
The man replied, “These are my penguins. They belong to me.”
“You need to take them to the zoo,” the policeman said.

The next day, the officer saw the same guy driving down the road. He pulled him over again.
He saw the penguins were still in the truck, but they were wearing sunglasses this time.
“I thought I told you to take these penguins to the zoo!” the officer said.
“I did,” the man replied. “And today I’m taking them to the beach.”
