Presidents Report

Thanks to Barb Mitchell for Chairing our Special meeting last Wednesday morning, 3^rd June.

Barb was able to negotiate a busy agenda with grace and efficiency. 33 members logged on to our Zoom meeting, ensuring we had a quorum in order to pass the updated Club Constitution and ByLaws. Many thanks to our Secretary, Geoff Michell, for all his hard work in revising these documents, especially the Bylaws, which now allow more flexibility for change, and more accurately reflect how our club operates.

Board Directors, please forward your reports to Adrian/Toni by the end of this week so they can be collated for the 2019/20 Annual Report.
A combined board meeting of the new and old board has been scheduled for 5pm on Tuesday, 9^th June via Zoom.

Club Service:

Ted Gretgrix and the fellowship committee met to discuss possible options for this years’ Changeover meeting, and they are outlined below:

Option 1. The Lakeview Hotels’ biggest room at the back is just under 100 sqm. Fit 22 people at a maximum. We could have that many people there on 4 July and connect others by Zoom either individually or in groups at houses. Checked out the Foundry Hotel, their biggest room about the same.

Option 2. We set a date in late July/early August and try to book a club where they could do 50 in one room; if we have more, or members were reluctant to come, they could watch by Zoom as in Option 1. That is probably a club venue and we would be spread out a bit to meet the social distancing requirements.

Option 3. We forget trying to get the whole club in one place and just go with the Groups of up to 10 or 20 in a number of houses connected by Zoom. That is hard to organize in order to have the social distancing. We could set up computers on the big TV’s so most people could see. That will involve a fair bit of organizing to get the IT right, and it would be mostly self-catering.

Option 4. Graham and Merrin very kindly offered the use of their home for the function; the suggestion was that we could conduct the function outside if the weather was suitable; or conduct it inside if necessary. People not there could still watch on Zoom.

The above options were discussed, and the overall opinion was to adopt option 2. The committee decided to nominate Sunday, 16^th August, as a tentative date. Ted also requested an indication of members who would be prepared to attend. This estimation was to be used as a guide, for the size of venue etc, to meet the COVID19 regulations.

Our guest speaker this week was Giorgio Migliaccio from “Destiny Rescue”; we thank him for his very poignant, confronting and inspiring presentation. Once again, our ongoing thanks to Jim Rolfe for his introductions of our guest speakers and writing the summaries of their presentations for the Bulletin.

Afghani Support

During the week, Kaye Graves from Bendigo Community Health, contacted Graeme Lynas to see if our club could do anything to assist members of the Afghani community in Bendigo who are currently experiencing severe emotional and financial distress. As a result, a number of members have made a personal contribution into the clubs’ general account. So far, a significant amount has been raised, and this money has been forwarded to Kaye for her to arrange distribution. If any members wish to make a contribution, please deposit your money into the club account, nominating Afghani Support, and your name.

Graeme is preparing a report for the Board meeting this coming Tuesday to see if the club wishes to offer any further assistance to the Afghani community.

Guest Speaker

The guest speaker for the meeting was Giorgio Migliaccio, the Partnership Manager of Destiny Rescue. Destiny Rescue is an Organisation founded in Queensland by Tony Kirwan and dedicated to the rescue of children destined to a life of exploitation through trafficking for slavery and sex. Giorgio has had first hand experience of the rescue process in Thailand. The Organisation also works in Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, India and the Dominican Republic.

Trafficking is a product of poverty. Parents live in remote villages and are often unaware by what means their daughters are earning money. Being a good daughter means going to these ends to provide for your family. Options to work in the Textile Industry are now only open to young people eighteen years or older. The rescue process involves reconnaissance and the support of law enforcement in Bars or at border crossings.Of the forty million enslaved in the world ten million are children.

Reintegration of rescued children involves either going back to the family or going to live in a rescue home. Here counselling is offered and children are returned to school. On a recent visit to a rescue home Giorgio was heartened to see girls returning for a visit in school uniform. Destiny Rescue is well aware of the sentiment of Martin Luther, "Only in darkness can you see the stars", as the organisation goes about the work of rehabilitating these young people.

Destiny Rescue is to be congratulated on a reintegration success rate of eighty four percent. We thank Giorgio for his professional and engaging presentation, his organisation is doing great work with those most vulnerable.
