President Report
President Report  June 16th
Greetings  Rotarians and friends of Bendigo Sandhurst,
Well this will be the last Presidents report I write for the newsletter, as next week we have the Wednesday off and Changeover is on Friday June 25th. If you have not booked with Ray or Toni then please do asap. tulip@netcon.net.au $45/hd for 2 courses and a welcome drink at the K’flat Sports Club. It’s a nice venue, Lizzie and I go there most weeks for dinner.
I will have lots more to say at changeover, but I have enjoyed the experience being President, despite the difficult year it has been. Great bunch of friendly people, keen to help others and we have fun doing it.
Wednesday we had a great turnout. 29 Rotarians at the BTC and 3 more online. And the speaker was the “bees knees” as my mother used to say. Chris Dawson is passionate and incredibly knowledgeable about the Beekeeping industry in Australia. See Jims writeup.
And the other highlight was inducting Karen Borserio as a new  member. We have increased membership this year. Big thanks to Barb, Paul, Evylyn and Jim for making it happen.
Saturday we hope to make a dollar. Weather looks OK so get down to Bunnings Epsom and buy a snag. Kev has organized the roster and it’s all systems go.

Covid 19 has been a huge interruption to the country. Lots of people, especially small business and the people they employ, often casuals, have been impacted financially to a great extent. However not many people have actually had Covid. Certainly I don’t think anyone in the Club. In fact no-one I know well personally has had it. Or at least I didn’t find out about it. Now we are all getting jabs hopefully no one will.
But there have been cases about and you might know someone. A member of the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk and his wife caught it. It is shared in this very powerful video. You might have to Ctrl + Click or even download vimeo. It’s worth the trouble.
If you are still thinking about applying for a Working with Children card. Please do it. Thank you to the people who have responded.
We will be back at the Bendigo Tennis Club on Wednesday June 30th with Robbie in charge.
KEEP THINKING ABOUT THIS.  We have reintroduced the WHO IS AWAY register which will help us plan our meetings particularly during the winter when a lot of us look for warmer climes. If you know you will be away, then send Bruce an email brucefraser8@bigpond.com  Like this. “Ted & Liz will be away 4 July to 28 August”.  It will also make it easier for Bruce to set up rosters.
Dates for the Diary
  • Bunnings BBQ  Saturday 19th June. Plenty of volunteers, you will be allocated to a 4 hour shift.
  • Morning Tea with DG Saturday June 19.

Birthdays for June         John Pacher on 27th.
Have a great week      cheers Ted.
A Quote:
And one last Joke:
After getting all of Pope John Paul's luggage loaded into the limo (and he doesn't travel light), the driver notices that the Pope is still standing on the curb. "Excuse me, Your Eminence," says the driver, "Would you please take your seat so we can leave?"
"Well, to tell you the truth," says the Pope, "they never let me drive at the Vatican, and I'd really like to drive today."
"I'm sorry but I cannot let you do that. I'd lose my job! And what if something should happen?" protests the driver, wishing he'd never gone to work that morning.
"There might be something extra in it for you," says the Pope.
Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Supreme Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 105 mph.
"Please slow down, Your Holiness!!!" pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens.
"Oh, dear God, I'm gonna lose my license," moans the driver.
The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his motorcycle, and gets on the radio. "I need to talk to the Chief," he says to the dispatcher.
The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he's stopped a limo going a hundred and five.
"So bust him," said the Chief.
"I don't think we want to do that, he's really important," said the cop. Chief exclaimed, "All the more reason!"
"No, I mean really important," said the cop. The Chief then asked, "Who ya got there, the Mayor?" Cop: "Bigger."
Chief: "Governor?" Cop: "Bigger."
"Well," said the Chief, "Who is it?" Cop: "I think it's God!"
Chief: "What makes you think it's God?"  Cop: "He's got the Pope for a limo driver!"

Guest speaker

Chris Dawson

Bee Keeper

The guest speaker for the meeting was leading local beekeeper, Chris Dawson. The European bee is an introduced species and is the best pollinator and honey producer. Bees that are native to Australia don't produce the same quality of honey as the introduced species which "flew" out on the first fleet. Yes there was a hive on board. Chris is passionate about the traditional methods of managing the hive. He fears that many of the skills of his craft are being lost with the introduction of large commercial enterprises.

There is no doubt that the bee family is a wonderful example of a matriarchal society. The drones  enjoy a life of leisure while the workers keep everything ticking over. There was a chorus from female members commenting that it's much the same with humanity! A hive can have anything up to 60 to 80 thousand worker bees and the queen can lay up to 3 thousand eggs a day.The female bees are wax making and create the honeycomb construction. The scout bees create new homes and gather nectar.

Contrary to popular belief the queen bee is not the ruler of the hive. Her primary function is to lay eggs that ensure the future of the community. Bees withdraw to the hive in winter and inevitably some perish in the cold. Aside from their importance as producers of honey, bees are the most important pollinators in the ecosystem and thus their future is critically important in an ever changing environment. Bees face a hostile future with changing seasonal patterns, increased use of chemicals and more widespread disease.

Chris has put to rest the origin of the manuku. He is adamant it was produced from the European bee and is native to Australia. Chris has been a beekeeper since the age of sixteen. He has many different locations for his hives which are constantly on the move. He prefers to make arrangements with private landowners to place his hives. Public forests can be problematic. We thank Chris for his very well researched presentation and we congratulate him on his contribution to and support of the Bendigo Apiarists Association.

DISTRICT CHANGE-OVER POSTPONED
STOP PRESS!!

We know you are all well aware of the ongoing situation in Melbourne with the Covid restrictions on numbers attending functions and would appreciate that this has made planning for the District Changeover a little challenging.

We want this function to be a celebration of the very different year we have just had and a chance to look forward to the next Rotary year with as many people as possible in attendance.

Hence the District Changeover has been moved to Saturday 10 July.  Same details, same venue, same time.

Thank you to everyone who has already booked.  If you are unable to attend on this new date please contact Jane Pennington (jane.pennington@rotary9800.org)  to arrange a refund.

If you have not yet booked, please do so and come and celebrate with your Rotary colleagues.  It will be “first in best dressed” for tickets as we are unsure what the restrictions will allow by then.  The invitation is attached with booking details.

If you have questions please contact Jane.

We both look forward to welcoming you to this wonderful celebration.
