When ordering their breakfast, this morning, members were greeted with, “this is on Bluey”. Thanks to Bluey and the Bridge Hotel a donation of $350.00 was made to the “End Polio Now” campaign. This translates, with support from D9800 and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to a $1,312.50 donation.

Chairman Gerard, commenced proceedings after getting the rowdy crew organised.

With a quick transition into a formal welcome to all, Gerard and George had the privilege of introducing Kevin Christian.

Kevin is out to visit his son Brad, an academic dentist at Latrobe University.

Thanks George for your kind introduction and looking after Kevin during the meeting.

After the usual “exchange of Banners’, Kevin sat back and listened and watched, with his parting comments to us all, “This is what Rotary should be and look like!” A positive reflection on all members, enjoying communal fellowship, working together and enjoying what we do.

Directors reports

Cathie gave an update on the lunchtime catering at Lightning Reef Primary School, scheduled for April 5 (last day term 1). Given this date some members will be pre-occupied with other matters!. The BBQ will be a partnership with the parents group.

Ted reported on a successful tree watering at OTIS, with an estimated 80% survival, President Graeme gave an impromptu impersonation of a kangaroo eating the grasses planted. Apparently this was amusing to some.

Ray and the RFE team planners have all of “the ducks lined up”, in anticipation of the arrival of the team from Canada on March 24^th.

Queensland Flood Relief

The Board has approved the distribution of $5,000.00 to each of the CWA branches in Julia Creek, Richmond and Cloncurry, to support families within their communities affected by the floods.

This was Phil Harris’s idea and John Cannon has been the driver to determine the suitable recipients. Thanks to everyone who has unanimously supported this action, to help our fellow countrymen in need.

Guest Speakers

After an ear piercing introduction of ‘Scotland the Brave”, our recent returned RFE team from Scotland gave us an interesting and enlightening presentation. Although disappointed that McTavis McHinneberg was not present, the team worked their way through a well thought out and structured program. It appeared that they were only but five, of the two million visitors who were in Edinburgh for the annual Festival during their stay. Busy was one word used to describe the city.

Initially the Scottish hosts were apprehensive about an RFE team, not done before and colonials to boot. At the end of the day it all worked out extremely well.

To summarise what Cathie, Toni, Ray and Brian had to say:

Lots of touring the countryside and rural villages, castles, churches, gardens, sculptures, follies, bridges, more castles, more churches, festivals, scones, jam and cream, whisky, more whisky, royal yachts, fantastic hosts, great food, great Rotary meetings, hospitality plus.
