A request to all members from incoming joint presidents Adrian and Ray
We would like to receive, as early as possible please, expressions of interest from members who would like to serve on the board of the club for the year ahead, namely 2023 / 2024.
While all members of the current board are doing a sterling job, we would like to ensure that each and every member has the opportunity now to put their name forward if they are interested in being a board member for next year.
For those members who have not served on the board before, it is not a daunting task, and it brings you right up to speed with everything that is going on in the club, in our cluster, and our district. There is usually a mix of experienced board members and relative newcomers, making for a good range of views and opinions contributing to eventual decisions.
All meetings are very pleasurable, and conducted in an extremely polite and democratic manner.
So, please give it some thought, and contact one of us as soon as reasonably possible to register your interest in any of the following positions.

President's report
Welcome to you all again.
Last week we had some issues at the meeting. I agree with the fact that the guest speaker’s presentation was affected by IT problems, both with the IT service in the facility and with the amount of people trying to correct it.
A discussion has been had with Bill Reid and an apology sent.
We will be adjusting the IT setup for a more reliable outcome. Some plans have already been set up. Following discussion with the facility staff they state the service frequently breaks down and as there is no acting manager it cannot be addressed yet. Review of different setup techniques and secure cord connections to the computer is being addressed.
A Beach Party Race Day BBQ at the Racetrack was well run by two great supervisors, Rotarian Cathie and Rotarian Evelyn. A steady flow of customers was at this social event, as no horses were running, just a screen from Ballarat track.
The Goldfields Cluster Presidents have had numerous zoom meetings to assess the Rochester Flood situation. Late Monday night a BBQ was quickly organized for Tuesday. Kevin, Rob and Tony along with Tom and Henry from Bendigo drove up with supplies collected by Matt from Kangaroo Flat and Geoff’s BBQ from Eaglehawk .It's wonderful to see what can be done in collaboration with all the clubs.
Further support days in Rochester will be organized when the co-ordinator contacts us. These will again be cluster events and will probably continue over the next few months. I will send out emails when we know, hopefully in advance of a few days. We may be needed for a couple of days a week.
Volunteers will be required to register before attending. Suitable clothing, gum boots, gloves and masks to be worn.
Echuca-Moama is in a very high-risk area for flooding as well, so please keep them in mind also. They are part of our Cluster too.
Bendigo South ran the National Science Challenge with the support of the Cluster clubs over a two-day event, Thursday and Friday this week, including a successful dinner on Thursday night. Thanks to Neville, John H, John C, Ray, Rob and Graeme for participating as supervisors. A very well organized, worthwhile and encouraging event.

Next week is the Bendigo Cup so there is no meeting in the morning. See you at the BBQ if it is still on.

HIBERNIAN HOTEL SUPPORT
Rochester Rotarian Bryan Griffith has asked our club members to be aware that
the HIBO Hotel Bendigo - Hibernian will be holding a fundraiser on Friday November 25th to show support and help raise funds for the Rochester community.
The HIBO will donate $1 from every meal sold, starting on Monday 24th of October til the 25th November (night of fundraiser) and $5 for every meal sold on the night.
The HIBO is also raising funds to put towards care packs for Rochester residents.

Guest speaker Bill Reid - Alma Doepel
This week Bill Reid, Communications and Tours Director with the “ALMA DOEPEL” recounted the fascinating story of this magnificent, historically significant vessel. The Alma Doepel is a 119-year-old three-masted topsail schooner that is available for the public to view on the Docklands North Wharf.
Built in 1903 in Bellingen NSW by Frederick Doepel, a trader and boat builder and named after his daughter, the ship sailed the Tasman Sea and became a familiar sight trading in the ports of Australia’s eastern coast until 1917.
She was acquired by Henry Jones (IXL) of Hobart, to carry freight to the South Yarra Jam Factory at that time and set the record for the fastest trip from Hobart to the Melbourne heads of 58 hours and 30 minutes. She was the only trader in the Bass Strait fleet to carry square sail.
In WW2, she was commissioned by the Army to carry troops and supplies around PNG and the islands, ideally suited to this because of her shallow draught. For this, she was derigged (masts and decking removed) and fitted with two truck engines to power her. Post-war, she was restored to sailing condition for the Melbourne-Hobart trade, and from 1961 to 1975 became a limestone carrier from Hobart to Bruny Island.
Purchased by Sail & Adventure in 1976 to be restored as a youth training ship, she was overhauled in 1988 in time for the tall ship fleet celebrations in Sydney Harbour. In the following 10 years, she made 140 nine-day Youth Sail Training voyages with over 4,000 young Victorians learning how to crew and sail her.
Extensive restoration works which began in 2009 are aimed at returning the Alma Doepel to her former glory.
