Co-Presidents report for 25 October, 2024 On Wednesday, our usual meeting was replaced with a fascinating visit to a factory in Thistle St, owned by Steve Bright, the proprietor of well-known printing business, Bart’n’Print. Here, Steve proudly showed us part of his
collection of vintage printing machinery and associated equipment from years gone by. Steve has just celebrated 47 years of continuous involvement in the printing industry, and it was a delight to see his passion and knowledge on
full display. He was very generous with his time for us, and we were very appreciative of the effort Steve put in to make our visit so memorable. He didn’t say so at the time, but Steve is a strong supporter of many worthy
organisations and causes in our area, and we also thank him for his generosity and kindness. Radio advertising: Next Tuesday, Linda is off to KLFM to record our recruitment message, which will be broadcast throughout the stations’ broad catchment area soon afterwards. It will run through November and into December. When the schedule is provided to us we will let everyone know, so we get an opportunity to hear it in context. Toyota BBQ: Several memberswent to Bendigo Toyota’s premises on Friday afternoon for a couple of hours to cook for a fundraising Trivia night for the benefit of Bendigo Health. It was nice to see how participants were dressed up for the night and to receive positive comments about the food we prepared for them. Thank you Rob, Liz, Ted, Colleen and Chris. Australia Day: At this stage, it seems that all is still in order for the community day festivities to go ahead as usual next year, however, a new council may decide to make changes, so all we can do at the moment is wait and see. The Toy Run which was to be run in late November has been cancelled. Sadly, it was decided that due to advice given to RCOBS, Anglicare and the Bike and Trike Club, the issue of public liability risk was too great to run the event. A reminder – a Short Working Bee at Comet Hill Reserve on Bendigo Cup Day: From 10am to around 11.30am or even earlier, next Wednesday, on Cup Day, we will clean up around the small trees and shrubs recently planted
there. Stewart has sent out a call to arms previously, but to repeat, if you can bring a mower and/or a whippersnipper, perhaps a rake, garden gloves, plastic tub for spreading the remaining mulch etc. This will get us over the line. Please contact Stew if you can spare a little time on the morning so as to help finish off this good project and having some fellowship and fun. Coffee and tea will be available. Board Meeting: This will be held at the home of Toni and Ray Carrington, starting at 5pm next Tuesday, 29 th October. Members are welcome to attend in person, or be involved via the usual weekly ZOOM link. Co-presidents Adrian and Ray
Industry Visit Oct 2024
Industry Visit to Vintage Letterpress 23/10/24
Steve Bright of Bart’n’Print took us for a walk into the past history of the printing industry with his stories of his beginning as an apprentice in the Victorian Railways Printing office in 1974.
The machinery at that time used individual letters sourced from a typecase to print train timetables and booklets for railway staff. From there Steve moved to Cambridge Press in Bendigo, where he learned to operate Linotype machines, which use molten lead to cast complete lines of type, rather than individual letters from a typecase. A great leap forward; Steve says that these machines have been described as “the eighth wonder of the world”.
Bart’n’Print began in 1977, and maintains and operates some of their original letterpress machines to this day. During the past 45 years, Steve has collected and preserved many letterpress- linotype printing machines, saving many from going to the scrapheap, telling the story of a large newspaper company in the USA simply pushing their outdated machines from a 3 rd story opening to the ground to be junked.
His collection of these machines and others, plus a vast array of memorabilia must be seen to be truly appreciated, and Steve’s enthusiasm, pride and love for them is wonderful. I would advise anyone who has an interest in the history of our past to call him up and visit his museum. We thank him very much for his time and informative walk-through.
Chris.
