Co-President's report
28th June 2024
Our guest speaker this week was Sharon Walsh, the manager of Volunteer Services with Bendigo Health. It was very sobering to listen to Sharon speak of the difficulties facing Bendigo Health in its attempts to recruit volunteers to assist and support patients, their families and friends, as they have a need to use our health system.
Volunteering generally is facing challenges, and we can only hope that Sharon is able to persevere and attract more members of our community to make life easier for Bendigo Health patients and their families.

Our directors reported on decisions taken at the previous nights’ board meeting. They outlined financial support decided upon for Polio Plus ($1,500), Donations In Kind ($3,500), Ovarian Cancer ($4,000) and Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Scholarship Program ($7,500). These were in addition to financial support through the year for many other charities and organizations, which will be published in our Annual Report.

In relation to our current board, several members are retiring at the end of this year. More will be said about them later, but at this stage, we would like to thank Cathie Miller (Club Service), Rob Rosaia (Community Service), John Harkin (Secretary), and Judy Miatke (Past President) for the magnificent work each of them has done over the past year. They are retiring this year to give others a go at steering our club. They have all been utterly focused on the duties of their respective portfolios, extraordinarily organized, dependable and reliable, and of enormous help to us. Thank you all very much for all you have done.

In sad news, the funeral of Bryan Griffiths, who was recently the serving President of Rochester Rotary Club, will take place this coming Wednesday, 3 rd July, at 1.30pm, at a graveside service at the Rochester cemetery. Following the service, refreshments will be served at the 4R’s (Rochester Racecourse Recreation Reserve).
Bryan’s partner, Angela Beutel, has asked that instead of flowers, a donation to Polio Plus in honour of Bryan, would be very much appreciated. The Polio Plus link is https://my.rotary.org/en/polioplus-fund (if you have a MyRotary account, just log in, or use the guest login link) if members would like to make a contribution to this great cause in Bryan’s memory.
Bryan was well connected with the wider Rochester community and with many clubs in our district. He was a driving force in Rotary to make the world a better place. Despite being personally affected by the flood he worked hard to help and coordinate flood relief. He also was working on replacing the ageing Rochester bus. Our heart goes out to the Rochester RC and the community its club members serve.
Rochester’s 60th Anniversary Celebration has been postponed until further notice.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at our last club meeting of this Rotary year and at our changeover on Sunday 7 July to welcome together with family and other Rotary friends the new board and to celebrate our achievements.

Co-presidents Ray Carrington and Adrian Schoo

Volunteering in Health
Sharon Walsh, Director of Volunteer Services at Bendigo Health was our guest speaker this week and it was great to get an insight into her role.
She has a history of 15 years at Bendigo Health and before that, 10 years at Cabrini Health.
In 2011 Sharon founded and is chair of Leaders of Health Volunteering Engagement Network. This has expanded from 8 to 200 members nationally and inclusive of New Zealand. This network hosts members from hospitals, community and aged care services with the aim to guide and support members in facilitating volunteering by sharing management skills, information and in an advisory capacity.
Volunteering at Bendigo Health took a severe hit during Covid, with numbers dropping from around 280 to 120, a 75% drop across the board.  Those that have returned are often working about 1/3 of the hours as previously done.
Sharon’s focus has been to rebuild this over all the health services at Bendigo.
Volunteers are often underestimated with the amount of work and relief to the staff that they provide. It is a team effort.
As many of the current volunteers are aging, Sharon has introduced a program including secondary students volunteering during the school holidays for 3 days with a regular volunteer as a mentor.  This has been beneficial in their personal growth and Sharon is finding that some return to continue this volunteer involvement.  Admittance to Latrobe University for those students that have volunteered has been preferential for some courses in regional areas also.
The potential roles of volunteers is diverse and includes companionship, meet and greet at the hospital and the day procedure unit.  It can also include involvement in Accident and Emergency Dept, clinical wards, back of house preparation, aged care and palliative care.
Many of you will have been a patient in the Bendigo Hospital or had family or friends requiring treatments there, so please consider sharing a few hours of your time to support this role.
Registration forms are available and assistance to complete these is accessible.

Scribe: Judy Miatke.
Upcoming Event Cancellation
Paul Henderson advises that the Reclink Football BBQ that was to be held on Wednesday 3rd July has been cancelled.  No BBQ required. Thanks to those members that had volunteered in advance.

Bgo Sandhurst Rotarians exploring
This week Paul Kirkpatrick features (thanks Paul) enjoying some warmer weather in Negombo, Sri Lanka for a couple of days before starting a 13 day cycle trip around the country (electric bike). Great weather, 30 degrees 😊.

This time of the year we see many of our members leave Bendigo to visit many places within Australia or around the world. It would be great to hear about their adventures when they return, but in the meantime a selfie at a local attraction on your trip would be greatly appreciated. WHO is Next??
We know there are a number of members out and about at the moment so please contribute a photo by emailing it to bulletin@rcobs.com.au.
Each month Rotary has a theme.
July's theme is Maternal and Child Health.
Rotary has projects around the world that are aimed at saving mothers and children's lives. See the link below for more details about the program and projects.
