It was good to see Dowell back at a meeting. Hope things keep improving Dowell. Also good to see George back from Bathurst – always a good idea to read the bulletin before you come to a meeting George!
Shirley McDonald – President of Inner Wheel Bendigo was a guest today.
Shirley attended to promote the major fundraising activity for Inner Wheel in Australia – Cord Blood Research. So far they have raised over 11 million dollars to keep this research going. Shirley showed a power point on all the areas benefiting from this research. Shirley forgot to mention that there will be a new release of a friendship Rose at the end of May/early June. $1.00 from every rose sold will go to the project. I will send around a flyer separately from the bulletin.
There was a Board meeting held last Monday night:
Annual fee for next year was discussed. Final decision to be made at next Board meeting
Friends of Rotary guidelines were discussed and in principle support given. Final decision to be made at the next Board meeting. The guideline will then be distributed to members.
Attendance guidelines were also discussed. Conor will present a paper at the next Board meeting with updated information about attendance opportunities and how they are recorded. This will also be circulated when approved.
LOA was approved for Paul Kirkpatrick and Peter Elliott
Leah Sertori has resigned from Rotary due to family commitments
District Conference opportunities:
Sponsorship is being sought – if you have any suggestions contact Gary Willson (Chairman of the Conference Committee) at garywillson@hotmail.com
Ideas for a legacy for Bendigo as a result of the Conference
Possibility for home billeting
Opportunities to be on the organising committee. Again, contact Gary if you are interested in being involved
REPORTS:
Community
Lots of sausages have been cooked recently – ANZAC Day over 1500, Groov’n the Moo over 1700 and more again at the HALT breakfast. Well done everyone.
The next one is on the Sunday of the long week-end for MOPAR.
Club
John Cannon spoke about the Rotary friendship exchanges. We recently hosted a team from England which as a great success. There will be a return trip to England in May next year. Ray, Toni, Graeme and Merrill have expressed interest in going and there are still some vacancies. If you are interested, talk to John.
He also told us about 2 other opportunities (Canada and New Mexico) which are return exchanges. No date has been set yet as expressions of interest are being sought. If there is enough interest, then a trip will be organised. Again, see John if you are interested.
Vocational
Peter introduced the Victorian Police Mentoring opportunity. He will email the details to all members. Peter is happy to discuss if you want further information
International
Patti Cotton reported on the recent container of knitting that was sent to East Timor – 1.2 tonnes of it! Lindsay kindly compressed the knitting into wool bales to get it all into the container. Patti expressed her gratitude to Lindsay.
The knitting sets that have been sent over ae given to children who have attended the clinic for immunizations and to mothers who come in to have their babies in a safe environment.
Patti is currently buying her annual supply of wool and is looking for any Spotlight vouchers that help her purchase more wool. If you or any family/friends have vouchers can you please send them Patti’s way.
Youth Services
Our club is doing the catering again for MUNA at Camp Getaway. We are providing meals Friday night through to Sunday lunch. The menu has been developed and food purchasing is organised, but there is a great need for volunteers – especially for breakfast and lunch on Sat & Sun. Let Martin know when you are able to help out.
Martin and Paul Henderson have had a meeting with the Principal of Weeroona College to outline the details of the District prgrams the students can become involved in.
President Elect
Paul invited all members to attend Assembly on Sunday – you don’t have to have a position in the incoming year. Assembly is a good opportunity to become more informed or updated on what is happening in the District and Rotary. It is also a great opportunity for fellowship. See Paul if you would like to go.
He also reminded people about the paid position to organise the Club Runner filing system and develop naming rules for documents. If there is any family member or friend who has the skills let them know about this. The details of what we are looking for is in the email Paul sent around.
Have a great week everyone. Cathie

AUSTRALIAN ROTARY HEALTH - DID YOU KNOW
Australian Rotary Health (formerly Australian Rotary Health Research Fund) was established by Rotary in Victoria in 1981 after a Rotary member, Ian Scott, heard a plea on the radio for help to research Cot Death. It quickly became a project supported by all Rotary Districts throughout Australia with 90% of clubs throughout Australia making a contribution. By 1985 funds were made available for a number of research projects into Cot Death (also known as SIDS) and as a result of this research it was found that one of the contributing factors was sleeping babies in the prone position. After a great deal of publicity of the findings of this research mothers changed the sleeping position of their babies and the number of Cot Deaths in Australia had reduced from 500 per year prior to the research to just over 100 in the late 90’s.
This is only the beginning. More about ARH next week.

A policeman knocked on my door this morning, but I just locked it and sat there in complete silence.

After 20 seconds he knocked again, but I just continued to ignore it. The knocks got louder and more frequent but I was determined not to move in the hope that he would just go away.

Then, he decided to look through the window. He shouted, "Do you think I'm stupid? I can see you in there, sir. Open the door!"

I said, "You're not coming in mate!"

He said, "I don't want to come in, I just want you to step out of the car."

A father gets into a car accident and injures his wrist pretty bad. He goes to the hospital where the doctor gets him all fixed up, but before he leaves he asks the doctor:

"Hey Doc, when this heals will I be able to play the piano?"

The doctor replied, "Yes,  of course. You'll be fine in just a few weeks."

"Perfect, I've always wanted to be able to play an instrument."

Buddy and his wife Edna went to the state fair every year, and every year Buddy would say, "Edna, I'd like to ride in that helicopter."

Edna always replied, "I know Buddy, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks."

One year Buddy and Edna went to the fair, and Buddy said, "Edna, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance."

To this, Edna replied, "Buddy that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks."

The pilot overheard the couple and said, "Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars."

Buddy and Edna agreed and up they went.

The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word.

When they landed, the pilot turned to Buddy and said, "By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed!"

Buddy replied, "Well, to tell you the truth, I almost said something when Edna fell out, but you know, fifty bucks is fifty bucks!
