Co-President's report
Co-presidents report 12 June, 2025
This week, we were able to welcome two visiting Rotarians, one from Traralgon, and the other from Shepparton. Both have recently settled in Bendigo, and are interested in joining a local Rotary club.  We hope they decide to join us and come along for the ride….
A big thank you to Ian Johnson for participating in a Q & A session with Jim.  Ian has certainly had a very active life of volunteering, and it was a privilege to learn about how much he has done, and continues to do, in this area.  We also learnt about his early life and subsequent working career, and thus got to know better this highly valued and respected club member.
The start of our commitment for the month of June to help out with the Bendigo Night Shelter program is running smoothly (see last week’s report for more detail).  Thank you to Liz Commadeur for her great work in helping to organise this supportive, badly-needed program together.
Director’s reports included the news that there will be a RecLink BBQ being provided by us next Wednesday at the California Gully Oval, from 12.30 onwards.  It’s always a very enjoyable event for us, and the footballers and their support teams always appreciate our efforts.
There has been a welcome change in the delivery of the Rotary Down Under magazine.  Apart from an online publication, members can now elect to also receive free hard copies by post.  Please let treasurer Madeleine know of your preference, and let secretary Paul know if any of your contact details have changed recently.
The next board meeting will be on Tuesday 17 June at the home of Toni and Ray Carrington, 179 Wattle St, Bendigo, at 5.00pm.  The incoming board will join the current board for this meeting.  As always, club members are welcome to attend either in person or via Zoom through the usual link we use for our breakfast meetings.
Club Changeover:  This is to be held again at Camp Getaway, this time on the last Sunday in June, at 12 noon for 12.30pm.  Please make sure to reply to Kevin Dobson by next Thursday, 19th June, for catering purposes.
See you again next week.

Guest Speaker
Guest Speaker- Q and A with Ian Johnson

Ian grew up in Bendigo, his family home being in Barnard Street before moving to the more wide open spaces of Junortoun. He has happy memories of his childhood perhaps not including the medicinal use his mother made of mustard. Ian attended Violet Street and Gravel Hill Primary schools before heading off to White Hills Technical School. He is fortunate to have both his children living in Bendigo and thoroughly enjoys supporting the activities of his grandchildren. He spends a lot of time with the White Hills Football Club where his grandson made his senior debut this year.

Ian commenced his working life at age fifteen and has made many attempts at retirement. He worked for the Greater City of Bendigo for thirty four years in administration. He looks back fondly on the days when the Commission was overseeing the operation of the council. Ian has been a CFA volunteer for over forty years. He is a member of a fire spotting team which is a process whereby potential outbreaks are spotted from the air or via towers. He continues to give service to the community through his work as a Rotarian and Foodshare.

Ian enjoys reading fiction books and watching documentaries on SBS in his leisure time. He has had some interesting overseas trips especially to Canada however he has come to appreciate the beauty of Australia more. Ian is a very community minded person. He derives great joy currently as a volunteer for Foodshare and his involvement as a member of our club. We thank Ian for sharing his life journey with us. Safe to say it was an inspiration for everyone.
Message from Graeme Lynas on his trip to Malaysia and Borneo.
While in Kota Kinabula I attended the Rotary Club of Luyang. They are a small but vibrant club undertaking many different types of activities. With the use of modern technology I was able to give a presentation on Bendigo and surrounding areas. Particular interest was in gold mining, the influence of the Chinese and the Golden Dragon Museum. One member has visited the museum and found to his surprise someone speaking Cantonese, hence he had a great time and has special memories of his visit. A lot of conversation centered around politics as Senator Penny Wong was born in Kota Kinabula and several Rotarians are friends of her family. We have traveled through Sabah and have seen the Big 5 of Borneo. You have to spend time searching in the rainforest for a sighting mainly from a small boat. It is hot and humid. We also went to the Sandakan and Ranau memorial park where the infamous death march commenced and ended
