Co-President's report

Co-presidents report 29 May, 2025

This weeks’ meeting was highlighted by the fact we were treated to two guest speakers in Bonnie Barkmeyer and Karen Armstrong.

Bonnie is Bendigo-born, an alumna of Bendigo Senior Secondary College, and is now a news reporter for local television station WINTV.  She gave us an illuminating account of how regional TV operates these days, with its challenges and rewards for her.  A lot has changed in this industry since regional TV was in its pomp some decades ago, and we can only hope that the voice of regional and rural Victorians, and indeed Australians in general, continues to be heard and recognised as valuable and necessary, by the television networks that operate in our country.  Jim’s fuller summation of Bonnie’s address is further along in this bulletin.

Major Karen Armstrong, of the Salvation Army, is also a member of the Eaglehawk Rotary Club.  Karen has had several postings around the country in her ministry, and always tries to join a Rotary club in the local district on each occasion.  By now, Karen must know what a good Rotary club looks like, and hopefully we are in that category …

Karen’s presentation was about asking our local Rotary clubs to consider assisting the Salvation Army’s winter appeal next year, thereby helping to make it more successful while simultaneously promoting Rotary’s image locally.  It sounded to us two like a worthy project for the club to get involved in, but ultimately it’s up to members to decide if this happens.  Again, Jim has a more detailed account of Karen’s presentation in this bulletin.

Overseas trips.  Next week, Brian and Jan Hodge are off to Uganda to deliver sought-after personal items for needy children at the Blue Kangaroo Kindergarten and School, in the village of Buyala.  These were sourced from the Donations In Kind warehouse in West Footscray, and add to the personal and financial support Brian and Jan have made over several years to the kinder and school in this impoverished district of Uganda.  As well, they will be overseeing the construction and delivery of school chairs and desks from locally-sourced materials and tradesmen with funds provided by our club.  A good club project, indeed.

Also, Graeme and Merrin Lynas are off to Malaysia to visit and stay with the two Special Education teachers they home hosted for a week early last year.  The two ladies were members of a team from Malaysia that came to our area on a tour to study the Australian approach to special education provision and delivery of services.  The friendships made have led to the trip, which will also involve visiting the Rotary clubs that sponsored the ladies’ visit to Bendigo and Echuca/Moama last year.  We wish Graeme and Merrin a safe and happy trip, and look forward to hearing of their experiences upon their return next month.
We look forward to seeing you all again next week.

Co-presidents Adrian and Ray

Thanks to members for providing photos of the various activities each week.
This weekend members provided some maintenance care to the revegetation planting at Comet Hill.
Look at the size of the seedlings! Some areas are booming, others are still small. Over all a good success rate for the first of the plantings.
Speaker Notes - Bonnie Barkmeyer
Guest Speaker- Bonnie Barkmeyer  Regional News Reporter and Karen Armstrong Red Shield Appeal

Bonnie started out as a Regional News Reporter at the age of 22 in Albury. At this time she discovered that her University degree hadn't prepared her well for the multitasking required to complete the on the groundwork. She was required to write her own scripts, do her make up and buy her own clothes all this on top of having a desk next to the boss and needing to do two stories a day. After various postings she returned to Bendigo and became the sub editor of Win News. A highlight of Bonnie's career was winning the Quill Award for excellence in Journalism.

Bonnie's career has coincided with the Black Saturday bushfires, the pandemic and the Rochester floods. This has reinforced the community contribution over and above providing news which reporters make. Local news outlets play a critical role in disseminating information and in highlighting local needs during times of disaster. This was especially the case in border towns such as Echuca and Moama during the pandemic when the notifications of closures and isolation were often unpredictable and included confusing detail. Bonnie was especially moved by the personal stories she reported on during these times.

Bonnie laments the scaling down of local news. There is little local content now through newspapers, radio and television. Proper resourcing, thorough and personal research are not part and parcel of the internet and social media. There are few accessible outlets now for "good news" stories which motivate and build community morale. It was wonderful to hear first-hand about the life of a local reporter. It is not the glamorous job that perhaps was the perspective of some of us. Bonnie is enjoying time with her son Alfred, this is another important part of her journey. Thank you, Bonnie, for being our guest.

It was wonderful also to welcome Karen Armstrong. Karen is a member of the Salvation Army and the Rotary Club of Eaglehawk. This is the 61st year that the Red Shield appeal has been conducted. Karen is exploring the possibility that Rotary might partner the Salvation Army at this time each year. We were all moved recently when Phil Redmond recounted how his grandmother, shunned as a single mother, during World War 1 in Britain was cared for by the Salvation Army. "Thank God for the Salvos" was her catch cry for the rest of her life. We thank and congratulate Karen for her very generous contribution to the community.
