Co-President's report
Co-Presidents report – 19 July 2024

At the first board meeting this Rotary year as co-presidents, we welcomed our new board members and thanked all who served on the board last year for their work, advice and skill in the operation of the club last year.

Our thanks go to retiring board members Judy Miatke (Past President), John Harkin (Secretary), Cathie Miller (Club Service) and Rob Rosaia (Community Service), and to continuing board members Kevin Reade (Fundraising), Geoff Michell (International Service), Madeleine Schoo (Treasurer) and Stewart Annan (Youth Services and Environment).

Our new directors are Paul Henderson (Secretary), Ted Gretgrix (Minute Secretary), Liz Commadeur (Community Service) and Jim Rolfe (Club Service), and we thank them for putting their hands up to fill these roles in the year ahead.
After a short induction in regard to our roles and governance requirements, particularly those required by Consumer Affairs Victoria and the ATO, the proposed budget was discussed to guide the board this year.
One decision was to keep the annual fees the same as last year, ie, $300 per member, with an additional $10 per annum if a member wishes to receive hard copies of the RDU magazine by post.

Some other decisions taken were to continue supporting valuable Rotary programs such as RYLA, RYPEN and NYSF, with the proviso that suitable local candidates are identified; ongoing support for Reclink; continued support for the Body Safety Program at Lightning Reef Primary School, our scholarship program for Timor Leste students; and involvement in local environmental projects as deemed appropriate.
The next board meeting has been set for Tuesday, 10th September at 5pm, at the home of Adrian and Madeleine, and club members are always welcome to attend in person or via Zoom.

The farewell dinner for Maurice and Pauline Woodburn, held at the inimitable Rising Sun Hotel, was very well attended, and a very pleasant night indeed. We hope they have time to visit us when they are in Bendigo, and we wish them good health and good fortune in their new life at Lake Boga. Our loss of Maurice and Pauline will be the gain of the Swan Hill Sunrise Rotary Club for certain.
The same can also be said of Barbara Mitchell, as she intends to join the Williamstown Rotary Club in the near future.
It was also nice to see Pat Sheehan back from his overseas trip, making sure that we were well looked after and behaved well.

This week, Doug Lougoon reported on the successful site marking for the Sheep and Wool Show that we took on this year for the first time. The show days will be attended by members of the team at intervals to see how it all runs from start to finish. This will give us a fuller picture of what is required in total, so we can make an informed decision as to if we decide to continue on after this year.

Stew provided an update on tree planting at Comet Hill Reserve, next to Lightning Reef PS, on Sunday 28th July, which is National Tree Planting Day. The Australia-wide event is promoted on the websites of Planet Ark and the City of Greater Bendigo, among others.

Thank you to the BBQ team that continues to support RecLink. As usual for this time of the year, the weather was a bit cool, so the hot food is always looked forward to by the umpires, the players and their supporters.

Our guest speaker Cheryl Deguara, from Australia Rotary Health in Sydney, presented on the program she leads, and focused on the indigenous scholarship program we supported to enhance rural and remote health service access, particularly for First Nations people. It was nice to see that our donation of $7500 to the program was acknowledged and appreciated, and the generally excellent outcomes this well-governed program delivers. (see more detail below in Jim Rolfe’s report).

Graeme Lynas also reported on his trip this week to the Donations In Kind warehouse last week whereby he was able to bring back to Bendigo an astonishing amount of warm clothing and footwear. These badly needed items were distributed to members of our local Karen community, 5 RecLink football clubs, and to Bendigo Community Health’s Refugee Transition Support agency. Our sincere thanks go to Graeme for his efforts to help others in great need of physical and moral support in our area.

Co-presidents Ray Carrington and Adrian Schoo

Guest Speaker - Cheryl Deguara from ARH
Cheryl is the Program Coordinator of Australian Rotary Health (ARH) and a member of the Rotary Club of Parramatta. Cheryl has been involved in Australian Rotary Health for twenty-one years. Rotary Health was the dream of Ian Smith, a member of Mornington Rotary, in 1981. He expressed a vision to raise $2 million to make a significant impact on health issues such as cot death which were prevalent at the time. Pleasingly cot deaths have decreased by 80%. Research into the mental health of children (0-12) and Indigenous Health are two of the current priorities.

Cheryl had a particular focus on Indigenous Health Scholarships in the context of our club making a $7.5K donation to this cause. Indigenous Health Scholarships started in 2003 at which time there was a twenty-year difference in life expectancy for First Nations Peoples. Geoff Bailey, a pharmacist, lobbied the South Australian government for the funding of Indigenous Health Scholarships. This was the beginning of a cooperative venture involving Rotary, the States and the Commonwealth governments.

Scholarships are available for the whole range of health practitioners including Social Workers. The scholarships have remained at $5K with Rotary Clubs providing half of that sum. The scholarships have contributed to 300 medical students successfully graduating between the years 2003-2024. Due to the extent of dropouts at the end of first year students are not considered for scholarships until into the second year of study. There are around eighty students sponsored each year. 20% of Indigenous doctors were sponsored by ARH. It was noted that some of these were graduates of RYLA and RYPEN.

Cheryl oversees a comprehensive application and mentoring process. She is a member of the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association. Interviews are conducted by phone and students are expected to complete reports twice yearly. For the most part students return to country after graduation. Cheryl is currently conducting meetings for next year's intake. Forty interested students recently attended the Victorian meeting. We thank Cheryl for providing us with a comprehensive overview of ARH and an explanation about how the funds donated by the Club will be expended.

Tree Planting – Sun 28th July, 10am till 12pm
at Comet Hill Reserve (see map below)

The Comet Creek Reserve is crown land adjacent to the Lightning Reef Primary School.  Long-term, our Club’s Environment Committee wants to tidy up the reserve, remove non-native plants and in-fill with native plants endemic to the region. This will improve the habitat for native birds and small native animals, frogs and insect species and provide an area for the Lightning Reef school to use for nature studies.

Earlier this year we requested a grant from Planet Arc so that we could source seedlings to plant at the Reserve as part of National Tree Day. Plant Arc has provided $500 with which we have bought 400 seedlings from Neangar Nursery.
The seedlings are all native shrubs rather than trees and comprise a mixture of different varieties of acacia, callistemon and saltbush.

When: Sun 28th July, 10am to 12pm
Where: Comet Hill Nature Reserve (next to Lightning Reef school)
What to wear: enclosed shoes, garden gloves, hat.

Update of Sri Lankan Housing Project - Ambalangoda

We finished our recent cycling trip to Sri Lanka with four days R&R at a resort in the beach area of Bentota. I found out that it was only about half an hour from the 2004 tsunami damaged area of Ambalangoda where our club assisted with funding of housing reconstruction.
Thanks to Martin R's ongoing contact with the RC of Columbo Fort, I was able to text a couple of club members to coordinate a visit to the housing project some 15 years after construction was completed.
On Sunday July 14 Rotarian Deepal Deepal met me in Ambalangoda to guide me to the houses.
The photos show that the 66 houses seem in reasonable condition. All are two story except three shop-houses. The properties are arranged around a semicircular road, with a community centre in the middle. The community centre is really just a shell and would possibly be a worthwhile project for a club to share.

The tenancy of the houses is managed by a local housing authority with rents being very minimal.

Members of RC Columbo Fort invited me to a meeting, however our travel plans precluded that. The club is interested in any further joint project that may be proposed. However, I do seem to remember that 20 odd years ago the financial reporting/acquittal aspect of the tsunami housing project became somewhat onerous for our club.

Bgo Sandhurst Rotarians exploring
This time of the year we see many of our members leave Bendigo to visit many places within Australia or around the world. It would be great to hear about their adventures when they return, but in the meantime a selfie at a local attraction on your trip would be greatly appreciated. WHO is Next??
I know there are a number of members out and about at the moment so please contribute a photo by emailing it to bulletin@rcobs.com.au.
A different slant on our roving Rotarians this week with a mystery photo from Rob Rosaia. Where Am I??
