President's Message

Acting President’s Report from PP John Harkin, meeting of 18 May:

President Paul apologised from Canberra, said there was little to report on his behalf and then gave me a significant list!  He stressed the Club Planning Day to review/renew the Club’s Strategic Plan, to which ALL members are welcome to attend.  Paul sent details in an email on Saturday to members.  Venue is the Lakeview Motor Inn, 286 Napier St, from 10am to 12 noon this Sunday 22 May.

We started out with the major project proposal for Maubisse, from Lindsay Murphy and Doug Lougoon.  See the paper emailed to all members by President Paul on Monday evening.  They were seeking members’ response to the proposal, to assist the Board decision on providing a used Toyota Prado to the Carmelite nuns at Maubisse.  A vehicle will enhance their use of “our” kitchen and reduce some of the physical demands, eg. delivering food to outlying villages.  Members indicated strong, almost unanimous, support for the Board to proceed with this project with funding from the club, Rotary District 9800 and Foundation.  The project will be considered at the next Board meeting.

We received reports from:
  • Paul Kirkpatrick on Foundation;
  • Kevin Reade on last weekend’s weekend away to Barham – 27 attendees, beautiful weather, golf, bowls, river cruise and dining out, as well as 2 injured backs;
  • PE Conor Cunningham on District Assembly, that clashed with the Barham trip;
  • Martin Ruffell on MUNA at Camp Getaway and the need for volunteers – 27-29 May;
  • Patti Cotton on her working bee straight after the meeting.

Our guest speaker was Michael Loughnan, a year 10 Girton student whom we sponsored recently to RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment).  He described the weekend activities and fielded a number of questions from Rotarians.  Michael was accompanied by his mother Libby, who was surprised how many of us she knew.

Thanks to Chairman Gerard House for filling spare minutes at the end of the meeting with “Calder questions”.

Remember the Planning Meeting this Sunday 22 May, volunteers needed for MUNA 27-29 May.  And our Club changeover has been set for Wednesday evening 6 July, after no meeting that day, so please update your diaries - venue is yet to be confirmed.

Have a good week
John Harkin
