AGM 2024
The Annual General Meeting of the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst Inc. will be held at 7:30AM on Wednesday 27 November 2024 at PepperGreen Farm, North Bendigo.

The AGM for 2023-24 will precede our normal breakfast meeting that day, and takes only about 10 minutes.   It will not interfere with a Guest Speaker, if any.  As a quorum of members is needed and if you cannot attend, please call in on Zoom, or provide a proxy.

It is legally required that all Incorporated organisations such as ours hold their AGM by the end of November each year and for the Secretary to advise Consumer Affairs (CAV) by the end of December that the club has complied.
Members will receive an email with a copy of the minutes of last year's AGM.  The Agenda of this year's meeting will be similar.
John Harkin
Co-President's report

Thank you Doug for sharing your travel memories and touching on the Lougoon family history and the connection with Bendigo. Very interesting and entertaining. Thank you again.

Daniel Robinson introduced himself as a new and leading employee at Pepper Green Farm with an interest in Rotary. We look forward to working together with him.
Our Futures Committee met with members who attended the strategic planning session that was facilitated by Warwick Cavell to make sure that the draft plan reflected the outcomes of that session before being ratified by the board on 3 December and presented to the club on 11 December.

Foundation Dinner: Our club was well presented at the annual Foundation dinner at the Chasers Function Centre, Lords Raceway, Junortoun. It was a good opportunity to network and learn from a well conducted presentation of Past DG Grant Hocking on our very efficient Rotary Foundation, the number one charity to support. *See photos from our week below

In the meantime, we may see you at the Swap Meet BBQ this weekend and look forward to a great event. Last but not least, there is a lot going on between now and early December. For your agenda:
  • Bendigo Toyota Golf day fundraiser for Foodshare. Every entrant gets a chance at the Hole in One prize.
  • Rochester RC 60th Anniversary on 23 Nov at 6.30pm in the Shire Hall. Four new club members will be inducted into the club, thereby more than doubling the club’s membership. Well done. We look forward to attending the evening.
  • 27 Nov AGM - Club AGM at PepperGreen Farm breakfast meeting – see email to members sent by John Harkin 7:26pm 30 Oct 2024
  • Christmas Lunch on 8 Dec at the Boundary Hotel - 11.30 for 12noon lunch. Please contact Judy.
Co-Presidents Ray and Adrian.

ABOVE: Our club was well represented at the Rotary Foundation dinner.

ABOVE: Past DG Grant Hocking gave an excellent presentation at the dinner.

ABOVE: The Maiden Gully Marist Cricket Club women's team with Stew and Cathie on Sunday. Our club donated just over $1,000 for cricketing kit last year.

ABOVE: Fun cooking at the Swap Meet - but what exactly is going on here?

Guest speaker - Doug Lougoon

Before Doug provided members with an overview of his recent trip to China, the new Farm Manager of Peppergreen Farm, Daniel Robinson, took the opportunity to introduce himself. Daniel brings a range of experience in management, including work with the Doxa Foundation, to this position. Daniel comes from a family with strong connections to Rotary. He recounted a number of exchange students who lived with the family and spoke fondly of the relationships which have developed over the years. We thank Daniel for dropping in and we look forward to forging more partnerships with Peppergreen Farm.

Doug and members of his family were hoping to visit the home of their grandfather. Members of the Australian/Chinese diaspora accompanied the family on the trip to China. The group landed in the city of Jiangmen (population 5 million). It is evident that big inroads have been made to clean up the quality of the air in China. There are many electric cars on the road. The group saw first hand examples of a strong manufacturing sector. There is a lot of encouragement and financial incentive for school leavers to develop the skills necessary to start up their own business.

There was much evidence of strong links with Bendigo. In one museum Russell 'Goldfields' Jack is featured. Doug commented about how well the collection at the Golden Dragon Museum compares with exhibits he saw in the Chinese museums. The group was extended wonderful hospitality, we saw a photograph of an extremely large lazy Susan with very generous portions of a large variety of food. Roast goose is a specialty of Southern China. The group visited a Chinese Medical Centre. Chinese Medicine uses a wide range of herbs and dates back 5,000 years.

The landscape of cities can be in contrast to those in Australia. There is often a blend of residential, manufacturing and agriculture in close proximity to each other. The group experienced the traditions of the ninth day of the ninth lunar month when it is customary to climb a mountain and pay respects to your elders. Doug and his family have successfully traced back to the home of their great grandfather. The records which were reviewed are without dates. There is every confidence now that the family will be able to trace their grandfather. We thank Doug for his very informative presentation and for all he does in promoting the multicultural dimension of Bendigo.

Invitation: Stop the Violence, End the Silence
Dear Rotarians,
In our ongoing commitment to end Domestic and Family Violence, the Rotary Club of Bendigo has been running the Stop the Violence, End the Silence advertorial on KLFM since July 2024. Through this campaign, we aim to foster Respectful Relationships in our community, promote mental wellbeing, and support safety for all.

As part of a multi nation campaign of action 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, our club is proud to support the launch of The Future is in Our Hands. This powerful initiative, featuring quotes from male community leaders and students at Camp Hill Primary School on the theme of “Respect is...,” will be displayed at the Pennyweight Outdoor Story Gallery in Pennyweight Lane, Bendigo.

We invite all members who are able to attend to join us for this meaningful event, wearing your Rotary-branded shirt. If possible, please add a touch of purple, the colour Rotary has chosen to symbolize our advocacy against domestic violence.

In the news...

Our club recently donated $5,000 towards a trishaw after a great presentation by Pam Erny regarding the Cycling Without Age program.
The Bendigo chapter is gaining plenty of interest and support.

We are legends!
Here's a great response from Gabrielle Richards on Facebook following the BBQ our club cooked for the recent trivia night.
They raised more than $5,000 for the Bendigo Health Foundation and the Move for Mental Health initiative.
Of course our club members are absolute legends!
