President’s Report

Fortunately we have a had a few sunny days to break the winter chills, and keep the bugs at bay!

Wednesday I had a session with Val Hogan on Phoenix FM, to have a general talk about Rotary in Bendigo and some of the future plans.

She has invited me back to discuss activities of the cluster clubs and is happy to advertise any  events in the region.

Thursday a catch up at the Ranch and met with Libby and her knitters. They have decided to continue over winter with small sessions ,

keeping on top of the supplies and  preventing, large workshops. Formation of a maintainence  committee from Bendigo and Bendigo South

were meeting to discuss plans for  bagging  and packaging.

You will find some of the clusters newsletter links are attached with the weeks information.

Tony Plant from Bendigo South approached me about advertising a concert they have arranged for October.Flyer  added.

Saturday was a changeover dinner for Kangaroo Flat this time, another great opportunity to network with the cluster.

Just a reminder re the Auction, items can be delivered to my address at 7 Bayne St Bendigo.

If no one home , can be left safely on the back porch.

Have a good week all.

Creating tomorrow - A better Rotary for members, clubs and communities

For some time now, Rotary International has been looking at how well we operate as an organisation and if our current structure is still fit for purpose,
given that it was first introduced 120 years ago.
It’s vital for Rotary to keep pace with changing attitudes and lifestyles and the way in which people now engage with causes, spend their time and
interact with friends.
The level of Rotary membership is an essential measure of our ability to adapt and, unfortunately, the declining trend is not reflective of a positive future.
After careful consideration, Rotary International has identified two regions in the world to investigate new ways of operating, these are Zone 8
(Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands) and also Zone 19 (Britain and Ireland).
Approval has been obtained to establish a Zone 8 Regionalisation working group made up of local Rotarians to explore, design and test new ways of
operating Rotary in our part of the world.
To proceed to the design and test phase of the project, we need the support of you, our members, in the form of a vote by Rotary clubs on behalf of
members that will be administered electronically by Rotary International in September.
I’m here to provide more information and explain why it would benefit us all to vote “Yes” on this proposal.
If the membership does vote in favour of the project proceeding then the following areas of focus will be addressed in the design and test phase:
1. We currently lack ‘one voice’ and a clear point of contact to engage as peers with partners at scale. There is no head of Rotary in
Australia or New Zealand or any of the other Pacific Island countries. If Government, large corporations or major Non-Government Organisations
want to collaborate with us, we don’t currently have a structure to engage with them effectively.
2. Sharing of expertise and talent is limited by club and district boundaries. Collaboration across these internal boundaries is left to individuals and
their ability to network – the system does not do enough to enable and inform such collaboration.
3. There’s significant duplication of internal administrative duties and overheads across clubs and districts, consuming our members’ scarce time and
creating costs. District officers spend significant time on the ‘workings of Rotary’ and not enough supporting the clubs in ‘the work of Rotary’.
4. If we can create more efficient structures beyond the club, we will better support the clubs in doing what they do best – do good in the world and
have fun while doing it! We will attract more members, provide more flexible models of membership that suit a more diverse society - and save costs to boot.
The journey of exploring, designing and testing new ways of operating will be an inclusive and collaborative process.
New models will be tested and reviewed for effectiveness over a period of 3 years in a staged manner, at each point proceeding further only if the suggested
change is working.
But first we need to vote – The upcoming vote is to decide if we, the members of Zone 8, want to be part of this pilot project or not. Each club will decide
how best to coordinate their own internal voting process for their members and the outcome will be reflected in September when each club will have one
vote either for against the pilot project proceeding.
As a member, your vote is your decision and I am here to not only make you aware of this process but also encourage you to consider a “yes” vote.
As I see it, change is coming regardless of how we vote because, based on current trends, Rotary will not continue its amazing story of global impact
if our membership continues to decline. So, the choice is between being part of designing the future or opting out; or letting someone else take the lead
and then being told to follow at a later date.

To help me with the roster, can you please let me know if you are able to help this term, and for which sessions you could be available,
