Bulletin Week 9

Oh, White a Night!. Coordinated by Bruce and Kev, the team who assembled to feed the massing crowds were not disappointed. With the plan to throw a few snags on early and to get some hot dogs ready, quickly developed into full gear as the early birds took advantage of the hot food that was prepared. Pete Rainey called in to say hello and finished up for an hour cooking and serving hot dogs (ran out at 7.15) Barb Mitchell in her second club bbq, was a will of the wisp, as her long time experience in the fast food industry and catering at Camp Getaway, came into play, plus the fact that she had to teach me how to use the GoPos machine. Phil Harris and Ned Upton became masters of the bread and serviette task, getting it ready for John Cannon, Cathie Miller and Glenn Maloney to serve the ever increasing crowds. Deb Reade stepped in to relieve me as cashier during the busy time and Ted Gretgrix and Paul Henderson took over the third and fourth shifts. Maurice Woodburn exercised complete control over the veggie burgers as did Doug Lougoon and Nick Christian (with moonboot!) on the sausages, although at times there appeared to be some dispute over the lines of demarcation for the snags and burgers. Bruce Fraser, capably as always had the burgers ready just in time (supervised by Sally). Kev as master of ceremonies had several conniptions as the power went off and had to call Ted Gretgrix for back up to get more food at 7.00pm. Ted and I (with fluoro) weaved our way through the thronging crowds from Gaol Road down through Pall Mall to Sydney Myer Place, pushing a supermarket trolley with 40 kg of snags and 3 trays of bread (fair chance that it is the first time that this has been done?)

Rob Rosaia and Geoff Michell did call in just to see if we were doing “it” the right way.

 

 

It was a fantastic night, where funds were raised for drought relief and great fellowship took place. Kev, Bruce and I, finally called it quits and were home by 4.00am.  Thanks everyone.

 

 

At this week’s meeting Rob stepped in as chair to welcome all and in particular our guest speaker Jim Evans.

Jim who was born in Flemington and moved as a chalky to Bendigo in 1973. He has been the President of the Bendigo Historical Society for 16 years and he has demonstrated a passion for the preservation of the history of this region. Jim did remind us that he spoke to the club 14 years ago and is ever grateful to Rotary as his daughter was an Exchange student to Japan. Now residing in Russia, his daughter speaks several languages and credits her life to the start that Rotary gave her.

The Bendigo Historical society now has over 150 members including schools, young and older people and organisations. The current collection of thousands artefacts and memorabilia is housed in North Bendigo and the push is for a new home. Wayne Gregson and others have been actively promoting the Law Courts as an ideal place for a museum, given that the buildings are deemed not fit for their current purpose in this modern age. This is obviously a discussion which will involve governments’ and others if it is to become a reality, plus the Law Courts would need to be built/relocated and the buildings re-purposed as a museum. Thanks Jim for a great insight into what the Society does and plans to do.

 

Our meeting this week on the 12^th is a club Forum. Directors will report on the actions of the previous Board meeting and the plans for respective portfolios over the next few months. It will also provide an opportunity for members to bring their ideas or concerns to the table.
