President's report
Welcome everyone
  • Here we are, all recovered from Australia Day, I think. Ready for the next events.
  • Last Friday Ted, Rob, Doug and I met with Pepper Green Farm staff to review the venue. Our first club meeting there will be on 15th February.
  • Following our meet on Weds Rob and I had a review with the manager of the tennis Centre to advise her of our change. Alison invited us to return if the need arises, even for social functions.
  • Unfortunately for our guest speaker, Andrew Atkinson from Police Veterans Victoria, our IT failed again. However, after much adjustment he completed his interesting story
  •  A market meeting for the Easter Markets reviewing details to be addressed for the Easter Market Events.
  • Wednesday saw us back to our Radio sessions at Phoenix FM with Anne Peace covering the Cluster's activities over Christmas, New year and encouraging the community to check out our different clubs and suitable meeting times.
  • Our Cluster for A Meal, hands on day was on Saturday. I am aware this clashed with other commitments we have.
  • There was a working bee at Camp Getaway.
  • Also, the BBQ at the Golf Club was on Sunday. So, there were plenty of events to choose from.

More post-auction action!
The adventures stemming from last year's club fundraising auction just keep rolling on!
Most recently, Adrian enjoyed a cruisy trip in the sidecar of JC's lovely retro Royal Enfield.
They did a scenic round trip to Maldon, Castlemaine, Chewton and Bendigo.
Thanks very much John for donating the ride as an auction item.

All systems go!
Adrian prepares for the ride.
The view from the sidecar.

Youth programs news
from Director Stew Annan

1. National Youth Science Forum (NYSF)
The NYSF program was run over 2 weeks in January. Initial feedback is that all 6 students from Bendigo including 4 sponsored by our club, had a fantastic and enriching experience.
The students will come to one of our meetings in a few weeks, so that Club members can meet them and hear directly about their experiences on the program.
Here are a couple of their comments:

"I found the program incredible. I went in hoping to go into engineering after I graduate and I was also considering medicine, but after finishing the program I felt certain that medicine was the right route for me. It was genuinely an invaluable experience (in my opinion)."

"I found the program extremely eye opening and I have recently uncovered my passion for science and have since discovered what I want to do after I finish year 12 at Marist.
I found that the program was really good in many aspects.
Not only were the activities and university trips really informative and engaging, but being able to go down to Melbourne with Tait, Rose, Owen, Saad and Montana and being able to bond with them while still getting a real view on what university life is like was a truly amazing experience.
I found many of the activities extremely informative and I would definitely feel more comfortable moving down to Melbourne for university.
My only criticism of the program was the Monash trip out in Clayton which wasn't particularly engaging for me because I'm more into biological science rather than computer science, however this is just personal preference and many people that I spoke to enjoyed the programming activity.
I want to extend my thanks to all Rotary in Bendigo for allowing me to have this opportunity and a special thanks to you, Stew, for communicating everything for us."

2. Update on the Rotary Youth Exchange Program.
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEX) is set to kick-off this year after being cancelled the last couple of years due to Covid. See following letter from Samantha Turner who is District 9800 YEX Chairperson. Samantha asks each Club to consider being involved in the program and asks for our response. For discussion at next Wednesday’s meeting.
    *******************************************************************

To All District 9800 Club Presidents, Presidents-Elect & Youth Service Chairs.

Ladies and Gents,

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I write to inform you that the Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEX) in District 9800 will be recommencing in 2023 after it was suspended due to covid lockdowns in 2020.  YEX is one of the most prestigious 12-month exchange programs offered anywhere in the world, and its objective since inception in the 1950’s has been to foster goodwill, friendships, peace and understanding between countries of the world.

This is as relevant today as it has ever been.  YEX provides a cultural and educational exchange, where a person from one country lives in the home of a family from another.  It is an opportunity to learn and understand firsthand each other’s values, beliefs and ways of thinking and to build friendships that last a lifetime.

This is a great opportunity for all involved. For the students, it is an opportunity to develop the next stage of their lives, where they leave the comfort of their family to discover and experience another culture, another family, another language, a new school and new friends.  In the process, they learn a great deal about themselves and what family means to them; how to be adaptable and resilient; being responsible for their actions; being diplomatic and many more things that can help them develop into the person they want to be.

For host Clubs, it is an opportunity to help mould the future of a student by sharing their Rotary values and to demonstrate how we contribute to peace and cultural diversity around the world.

It is also an ideal program to introduce new members to your Club, through both, its sponsorship of outbound students from District 9800 and connection with their parents and the opportunity to source host families from outside your Club, needed to host inbound students.  Every Club has ties with the Family of Rotary and this is an ideal opportunity to bring them into the fold.

Newer members of your Club, particularly those with an interest in youth development, can also be called upon to contribute to your Club activities and become an engaged and valuable member, whether it be to host a student, source host families, or even arrange activities for students during their 12 month stay at your Club.

In addition, the program assists your Club to form or cement partnerships with nearby secondary schools from where potential outbound students can be identified, as well as being the school to accept the enrolment of inbound students.  You might consider how many other youth programs conducted by your Club would benefit from a closer tie to your local secondary schools.

First to resume will be inbound students from other countries.  The arrival of inbound students is anticipated around July 2023 and the number of students will depend on the number of Clubs that are prepared to host a student.  Outbound exchanges to other countries will recommence in January 2024.  These dates mean that the District 9800 Youth Exchange Committee is seeking Club commitments before the end of April 2023.  As this involves making a decision before the 2023/24 Rotary year, we are reaching out to current Presidents, Presidents-Elect and Youth Service Committee Chairs.

What I respectfully ask every Club to do is to advise me whether or not they would like sponsor an outbound student, or host an inbound  student for the 2023/24 Rotary year.  All members of the Youth Exchange Committee are available to answer any queries you may have and are also willing to arrange a guest speaker for your Club to provide more information and answer questions.

The District 9800 Youth Exchange Committee provides a huge amount of support to participating Clubs and students before, during and after the exchange.  We would greatly appreciate your response before 24 December 2023, even if your Club is considers it is currently unable to participate, but may be interested in future.

If you would like more information before making a decision, or want someone to present to your Club, please contact Garry Gunnell (from Bendigo Rotary) on 0448 405709, or by email - gunnell1@bigpond.com.

Yours in Rotary,

Samantha Turner

Guest speaker - Andrew Atkinson

Andrew is a retired Police Detective who now works in support of Police Veterans Victoria. Police Veterans Victoria was set up during the time when Graham Ashton was the Chief Commissioner. Police Officers experience an inordinate number of traumatic incidents when compared with the general population. It is not surprising therefore that much of the work of Police Veterans Victoria is focused on providing support for the mental illness which results from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Andrew noted that sadly this can set in or become worse during retirement.

Police Veterans Victoria is doing a lot of work to change the culture about appropriate ways to deal with PTSD. There was a time when there was no debriefing available and it was considered a sign of weakness if a Police Officer sought help for mental health issues resulting from PTSD. Seeking help was also looked on as a barrier to promotion. This resulted in Police Officers turning to alcohol as a means of coping. The Police Force exhibited a culture which could only be described as a "Boy's Club".

Andrew noted that the numbers coming forward to seek support from PVV are increasing and that this is a good sign that the culture is changing. PVV provides a hub of support where Police Officers experiencing the effects of anxiety, depression and social isolation can come and talk to peers who have understanding and knowledge of their experiences. This provides a safe haven away from the workplace. PVV is funded through the generosity of Police Officers and donations from the public and corporate sector. There are four full time staff who offer counselling and wellbeing services.

Andrew related some of his own personal experiences as a Detective including the dangers of undercover work. This was a lifelong ambition for him. The high pressure work including experiencing the death of children and suicides all took their toll. Sadly Andrew was diagnosed with cancer and transitioned out of the Police Force. He lives now with the support of a companion dog and as well as his work with PVV is completing a Bachelor of Arts. We thank Andrew for his very engaging presentation and we wish him well in this very important life changing work.
