President’s Report

Morning all,

What amazing motivated young speakers from the Bendigo Youth Council last week, extremely engaging and entertaining. Very stimulating to see the direction they are taking us.

Oh, what a busy week it has been, lots of preparation for the Auction, a wonderful team effort by the committee, led by Adrian Schoo. Even though the day was extremely miserable, the set up went well with many hands onboard. What a buzz from 6pm until close and pack up.

Such entertainment with Doug Lougoon as the Master, handing out a quiz about the items to be auctioned for starters. On with the fun, fellowship, frivolity and fundraiser.

It was great to see visitors from the Cluster clubs attending, Bendigo, Bendigo South, Eaglehawk and Rochester and spending also. Obviously, Kevin Reade will be starting up his own family bee keeping farm with the amount of education they have purchased. Special thanks to Evelyn Lehman, Paul Henderson and John Cannon for their input and smooth running on the night.

Eaglehawk had generously donated the hall and both Ron Payne and Alison Bacon kept us in fine spirits manning the bar. Many thanks for donating your time also. We owe you!

Our funds raised were well above expectation.

Who knows it may even turn out to be an annual event.!!!

Sunday morning Alison Bacon had arranged a Cluster session at the Mechanics Hall on My Rotary. The aim was to teach us the importance of our club's documentation, for now and looking at future directions. This will be beneficial for us as well as district.

Again, I encourage you all to add to our donations for the flood victims, would be great if we can send back a couple of boxes with our guest speakers from Rochester this week.

We will be voting soon on the Regionalization project, so am hoping you have all taken advantage of the webinars by now.

Bruce’s last meeting on Wednesday. Partners and friends invited. Please advise Ian for extra numbers coming by Tuesday morning for catering purposes.

It’s here at last our dinner meeting with Castlemaine!

So, on Wednesday 24^th August we will not be having our morning meeting, instead attending Castlemaine’s Dinner Meeting. 6pm at The Cumberland Hotel Barker St Castlemaine.

Numbers by the end of this week please to Ian Johnson, Club Service Director. An idea to carpool for this event will add to the fellowship of the evening.

Guest Speakers

Guest Speakers

The guest speakers for the meeting were Victoria Tangey, Ryan Petersen and Remus Brasier. Victoria is the Mayor and Ryan and Remus are the Deputy Mayors of the Junior Council of the CoGB. The Junior Council was set up three years ago and people aged 14-24 are eligible. The current membership totals sixteen. The Council advocates for youth on matters relating to planning and policy as well as relevant Council projects. Members were certainly entertained by three outstanding speakers.

Victoria after organising her visual presentation and the connection for zoom participants explained the role of the Junior Council. The Youth Council promotes the important contribution youth can make to the community. It serves to model for young people the importance of good citizenship and provides opportunities to develop leadership skills. Councillors have a formal opportunity to listen to the views of young people. A key responsibility of the Youth Council is to oversee the implementation of the Youth Strategy of the CoGB.

Before Neville could introduce our speakers, Past President Rob introduced Ryan as the son of a former member, Phil, and as his next door neighbour. Rob went on to accuse Ryan of stealing strawberries from his garden when he was younger, something Ryan didn't deny. At the Youth Parliament in June Ryan was elected as Premier and Remus was voted the best speaker of the whole Youth Parliament. It was easy to see why! As so often happens with our guests there are school connections with Neville. He taught Victoria's father and Remus' grandfather was a Principal colleague.

The Junior Councillors had a wonderful sense of humour and handled questions from members very well. Even the mandatory question about the representation of Kangaroo Flat wasn't enough to throw them. After the meeting Victoria, Ryan and Remus said how much they enjoyed the meeting. They hadn't expected Rotary to be so much fun. We are lucky to have so many great young people in our community. We are especially grateful to Victoria, Ryan and Remus for the giving of their time to be our guests.
