The Glenferrie Rotary Club has broken with long-standing Rotary tradition and moved to a trial of fortnightly rather than weekly meetings. In February this year, the Club, with about 45 members, held a vote on moving to fortnightly meetings for a trial period to mid-2016. The move was overwhelmingly supported. The meeting format will be reviewed mid-year, but there’s a strong feeling at the Club that the meeting format will continue into 2016-17. Asked about the move, President Robert Winspear remarked :“Our club has a number of projects that see many members coming together on a weekly or fortnightly basis, in addition to normal meetings. Our new meeting schedule re-balances our activities towards service in the true spirit of Rotary. Within an active Club with good internet, Facebook, email and social media communication channels, weekly face-to-face meetings are increasingly likely to be things of the past. Weekly meetings can be a turn-off for new members, and are expensive. Our Club runs the Boroondara Farmers’ Market two or three times a month, each time needing 20 Club volunteers, together with other weekly service activities. “ Like many other clubs, Glenferrie needs reinvigoration as membership has been static and ageing. He says, “The average age of our Club was 60 in 1998. Now it’s 70. Busy younger professionals nowadays aren’t interested in attending club meetings for the sake of fulfilling meaningless attendance requirements.” The club now meets on the first, third and fifth Tuesday evenings. Members also meet informally on ‘off’ weeks. Immediate Past President Jeremy Romanes says the Rotary International constitution, which appears to require weekly meetings, is obsolete and in the absence of a Rotary police force, can be regarded as irrelevant. The word “meet” can now mean many things, he says, even including email exchanges. “RI had a trial from 2007-13 with 200 clubs meeting fortnightly. The results appeared overwhelmingly positive but no constitutional change resulted,” he says. “Our view is that a strict view of Rotary meeting requirements doesn’t provide clubs with the flexibility to adopt strategies that get more people contributing to community more often, which is one of Rotary’s central aims.” The club has a ditty to remind members which are ‘on’ and ‘off’ weeks: “One three five keeps the club alive” – ie no meetings second and fourth Tuesdays. “We would encourage other clubs to review their meeting structure and make sure that they have a structure that makes them attractive to new members, and strikes the right balance between service and club fellowship” Jeremy said. Thanks to past President Doug Lougoon for taking the reins at last week’s club forum

Thanks to all the directors and members for their input to the Club forum it's always good to have some vigorous and mature debate about important issues within the Club.

This week we begin in earnest the 3-month trial of the new meeting arrangements with an informal coffee morning at Bendigo TAFE coffee shop, Vahlands, which fronts Hargreaves St, (not our usual meeting room) at 7:20 for 7:30am. Coffee and food at cost for those who would like it.

A reminder of the District has agreed to run the District Leadership Course here in Bendigo.
The 1st part of the program will run on the Sunday 24th April, 9.30 to 12noon at the Bendigo Club at a reduced cost of $30 pp they will then work out timing etc. from there on running the other 3 parts down the track.
This is a great opportunity for members who want to learn more about Rotary of who may be interested in a leadership role in the future. It's great that District has agreed to run it here in Bendigo and it would be great if members could support the program.

Bendigo Foodshare’s Million meals in March campaign wraps up with the final event, a luncheon with Christine Nixon speaking about Premiers and underworld crime on Friday April 15^th,12pm to 2pm with a cost of $50 a head or $330 per table of 7. The Rotary Club of Bendigo is holding a fundraiser with proceeds going to the survivors of family violence. The club is screening the Film “As it is in Heaven” (English subtitles) on the 17^th May 2016, 6.30 pm at Ulumbarra Theatre. The evening will also provide the opportunity for the patrons to hear Rosie Batty, Australian of the year 2015 talk about the importance of addressing this issue. District Assembly - this is to be held on Sunday 15 May 16. This a good opportunity not only for incoming club officers but for new members to find out more about Rotary.

Rochester Port and Pie Night - having not been held last year is to be held on Saturday 7 May, 16 at the Court House 25 Moore St Rochester commencing at 7.30pm. Refer to attached. By attending you will be able to see the transformation of the derelict Court House to a newly renovated asset. The Club has done a great job on this asset.

Bendigo next Generation are looking for support for the Rotary Relay for life team which is on this weekend, Friday 15^th and Saturday 16^th. If you’ve never been to Relay for Life, it’s a 24 hour walking (or running if you want!) relay where groups get sponsorships to do the event, all money raised goes to the cancer council. Teams must have at least one person on the track at all times with their baton. They currently have some gaps from 4am Saturday morning till 10.30am and 12noon to 3.30 pm Saturday. Also if anyone is available for setup from 4pm Friday. You need to register to walk so join the team before you come on the day, it costs just $25: Sign up by clicking here!
