Industry Visit - LaTrobe University Health Sciences Faculty
Our next Industry visit will be to the Health Sciences Faculty of La Trobe University on Wednesday September 6th at 8AM. The Health Sciences Faculty can be accessed from Gate 7 which is immediately beyond the roundabout in Sharon Street (if travelling from Ellis Street). We will meet in the Nancy Long Dining Hall at 8AM for tea/coffee and a talk. The Nancy Long Dining Hall is on the right off Arts Drive which is at the end of the car park (at Gate 7).This building has citrus plants growing on mesh. Please enter at the back. A tour of the Health Sciences Faculty will follow the talk and members are welcome to stay for breakfast which La Trobe will very generously provide around 9AM.
Parking is available in the carpark at gate seven until 10AM or alternatively in Sharon Street or Hillview Street where there is unrestricted parking. Please feel free to contact Jim Rolfe (0407554263) if you have any queries.
Co-Presidents' report
Another Federation Picnic day at Malone Park, Marong, has come and gone. As usual, it’s always a most enjoyable day, with plenty of laughs and the grandstand opportunity to view the passing parade of superb vintage and veteran motor cars, trucks, tractors and motor bikes.
Many thanks to Kevin, Rob, Stan and other club members for organizing all the supplies, the setting up and the packing up we needed on the day. A combination of our food and drink sales, and donations from the 2 entrance gates, helped to make the day successful financially. Bring on next year…..
La Trobe Uni Health Sciences Tour. We look forward to this visit to La Trobe on Wednesday, very kindly arranged by Jim Rolfe. It should be most interesting to hear of the establishment of the faculty and the various disciplines and current subjects on offer for rural students.
Club badge design. Just a reminder that with the update of our logo we need to consider what our badges will look like to reflect this. Although there is no plan to change the badges right now, we need to be prepared for new members or the possible replacement of broken badges. Ideas on how a new badge could look like are most welcome. The final decision will be made by a vote from the club members.
District Governor visit. Ron (DG) and Deb Payne, and Alison Bacon (AG), were warmly welcomed at our last club meeting. After an inspiring presentation of the DG there was an opportunity for the board to meet and discuss various issues with the DG such as regionalisation, corporate membership and funding opportunities through the RC of Balwyn. Thank you Ron, Deb and Alison.

Guest speaker - District Governor Ron Payne
It was wonderful to have Ron and his wife, Deb, as our guests. Ron is committed to bringing the common touch to his year as District Governor. He is of the view that a positive working relationship between the District and the sixty two clubs builds morale and energises members.
The four pillars of the Rotary International Action Plan serve to guide our work at both District and Club levels. A focus on Impact (programs with the greatest impact), Reach (embracing diversity, equity and inclusion), Engage (valuing everybody) and Adapt (streamlining operations) are timely responses to the challenges of recent times.
The President of Rotary International is Gordon McInally, a member of the Scottish Club of South Queensferry, Lothian Scotland (another nice link with Bendigo Sandhurst's already strong ties with Rotary in Scotland).
Ron played an inspirational extract of Gordon's vision for Rotary. Members were moved by his graciousness in acknowledging those who had gone before in the role. Gordon spoke of the importance of building a bridge to the next year and advancing the good ideas of previous leaders. Communal and personal challenge and the courage to express our vulnerability are at the heart of growth and learning.
The beautiful sea shell which was a gift from a woman in Thailand who has lost everything in a recent tsunami served as a symbol of the importance of optimism and hope for Gordon. Hope is a undervalued "virtue". McCormick says "Hope matters and we cannot live without it. Hope is not a wish or desire for things to be different, it is a course of action, a coming together of the mind and the heart." This approach underpins the annual priorities for our district. Inspired by hope and with the proper information we can formulate the programs and projects which have the biggest impact.
Ron spoke of the importance of fellowship and the celebration and promotion of the benefits of volunteerism. The meaningful engagement of members is the key to retention and ultimately has the potential to increase membership.
Ron spoke of the importance of networking, sharing our stories and making connections with other clubs involved in similar projects to ourselves. Ron's commitment and passion is infectious. As one of our own he also brings a sense of pride and an appreciation of what is possible. We wish him well in the role and we thank him for his very engaging presentation.

Walk for Prems letter to our club:
Thank you for your time on the phone earlier today,
As mentioned, Life’s Little Treasures Foundation supports, educates, and connects families of premature and sick babies to move from a space of isolation to empowerment.
Our mission is to ensure that no family endures the traumatic and life-changing experience of having a premature or sick baby without easy access to critical information and veteran community support through their journey.
We ensure that the complimentary family centered care services and information provided to families is accurate, up to date and evidence based. This is done through active working relationships with several research bodies and training organizations, including The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), and the Australasian NIDCAP Training Centre.
The positive outcomes of our psychosocial support for families during a traumatic time of isolation is clear and we want to ensure that all families have the same access to our support and services.
To achieve this, we want to build community support in the Bendigo region via our Walk for Prems event. The funds raised will go back into local community support via our support packs, guidebooks and our future aim of face-to-face morning tea support groups at the Special Care Nursery at Bendigo Health.
