President’s Report

This week’s trip to Thales for our, industry meeting has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. Our July visit window is still on.

Thanks to all who turned up to help at the Reclink football last Wednesday our side won.

Reclink is on again this coming Tuesday, at Waterson Court Golden Square 10:30am start - 1:30pm finish. The organizers are expecting 150-200 to be in attendance. Please contact Bruce of your availability should be a great day out.

Change over preparations nearly done, with just a few details to finalise, well done Judy. If your situation has changed please notify Judy as soon as possible.

As mentioned at the last meeting the Board has approved a further two projects. One being $20 K for the expansion of the Chinese Museum and the other $10 K, for the continuation of passions and pathways and including body and safety programs for the Lightning Reef primary school.

As this is my final written presidential report, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all Directors and members of this terrific Club for all the support and help throughout the year. I have enjoyed the year past immensely

This week Peter Morris spoke on the topic of “Passing the Baton”. Peter is an ex-journalist,

administrator, and small business advisor to state and federal governments

and public service. He addressed the issues associated with Baby Boomer business

owners retiring and seeking to sell their businesses to the next generation.

He drew our attention to the census figures that show that 25% of our population (5.5 million) were

born between 1946 and 1964 -the “Baby Boomers”- and that in Bendigo alone 47% of business

owners are BB’s looking to sell what has become their pride and joy before retiring.

The problem arises when there are no takers. So the business closes and the town loses that outlet.

The knowledge and experience embedded in that business may then be lost for want of a suitable

younger proprietor. Peter sees the crying need for a program that says to younger people, “This is

how you buy an existing, working, business”. A program which invites young people to meet with

and be mentored by current and past business owners. To teach them how to regenerate a perhaps

flagging business, rather than have it close with the loss to the town.

How can Rotary help? By becoming a form of an Old Coots Club, where with our knowledge and

expertise we can provide guidance and mentoring to prospective businesspeople. At the same time,

we can tap into a possible membership group who are vastly underrepresented in our ranks.

We thank Peter for giving us a better understanding of this issue.

Breakfast Menu Update.

After prolonged discussion the Tennis Club Breakfast has been settled upon, with the integration of variety and pricing sought by the members. The Centre will be presenting the current Continental Breakfast offering with the addition of Ham, Cheese, and Tomato Toasties, Cheese and Tomato Toasties, and Bacon, Egg, and Tomato Rolls. These will be made freshly each morning and presented in the Bain-marie for warming. Price $18.00. This menu will be launched on Wednesday July 4^th. Tuck in…
