Anne Carey is booked as Guest Speaker for the meeting on 31st August

We are lucky to get her along as she is flying from Perth for the "Women Showing the Way" event later in the morning which Lisa has organised for the

last 7 years. Anne usually charges $2000+ but because she is doing the WSTW is presenting for free for Rotary. Students from Bendigo schools (year 10)

are invited to attend to hear from inspiring women speakers and mentors from Vic police, nurses, politicians are placed on each table amongst the students.

Anne Maria Carey, born in Dublin in 1958, moved with her large Irish Family to Australia in 1969.

Left school at 14 and after 6 years in the workforce joined a missionary order. Studied nursing and

midwifery before going to PNG where she ran a remote hospital in a poor rural district of PNG. After

18 years in the order left to work in health care in remote areas of Australia interleaved with

Red Cross Missions in war zones overseas and completing her Masters in Public Health and

Tropical Medicine. She was a member of the Red Cross team that stayed in Gereida Sudan.

Gereida was the world’s largest refugee camp and had come under armed attack. All the other

agencies including UN abandoned the camp. Subsequent focus of world attention on the plight of the

refugees and the Red Cross workers prevented subsequent attacks. More recently Anne Carey

became involved in the running of the Red Cross Ebola treatment centres in Sierra Leone. She was

there at the height of the epidemic through to the recovery phase. She received the Pride of Australia

Care and Compassion Award 2015 and is the 2016 WA Australian of the Year.

The Guiding principal by which Anne tries to live is to have the courage to be kind.

Currently as the Western Australian of the year it is Anne’s intention to channel the same energy that

she used to tackle the bully Ebola with to raise awareness and tackle bullying in the health workforce

and unkind treatment of refugees. Anne resides in Esperance with Donald (a doctor) and Rusty (a dog).

Great news, the Rotary Club of Bendigo is holding a trivia night, Saturday 3rd of September at the Bendigo Club.

We'd love to get you, or your team along to this fun event, raising funds for important local projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Bendigo.

Please see attached flyer, feel free to pass on to your contacts, add to your newsletters etc, put up in shop windows, talk to your neighbour/colleagues etc,

and if you would like to come along as a single or couple or grab a whole table (up to 8 people) please let me know or give the Bendigo Club a call.

Alternatively, if you are unable to come & you would like to contribute to the event, small prizes or donations are most welcome.

Sunday at a Rotary Learning Institute workshop left me pondering:

@ Golden Square Primary School (the venue) is a mind blowing school of the future;

@ Discussing new member mentoring I had to admit I thought my first District Assembly was a social get together ... Duh ...

@ Membership is agenda item 1.0 all day, every day, at all levels

@ The unbridled generosity and intelligent enthusiasm of all attendees at the session

@ Rotarians are really smart, and eloquent

@ Rotarians drove from Woodend, Kyneton and Echuca for this rural workshop

@ A superb catered lunch from Percy & Percy

@ Meeting one perfect Rotarian, who waited 22 years to be invited to join a club

@ Greeting my cluster PE's

@ The presenters' professional expertise, preparation and time-keeping

@ Academics identify at least twenty types of leadership

@ That every one of us is a leader ... We all influence ...

@ Butchers' paper is still an education tool

@ There are more than thirty ways we interact .. Even in the coffee corner ..

@ I didn't talk too much ... Well, by my standards ... ...

@ Workshops are enjoyable, and open to any Rotarians.

@ There is homework ... and no tests.

Belinda President e-Melbourne emailed me re “ZOOM” … apparently a conferencing Skype like program even I can understand.
I’m meeting with Val, PE Bendigo RC tomorrow as lead in to cluster PE’s preparing for 17/18
Team Leader Lindsay Murphy starting to pack bags to lead members and friends to East Timor Sep 29 to build the roof on the school at Malau, near Maubisse. The roof meccano set has been designed by Lindsay and manufactured in Bendigo supported by $20,000 AUD Grant from Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee.
- Team baggage will include 3 sets SECA baby scales donated via Carmelite Fathers South Melbourne [Normally $460 AUD retail each]
- Oh, and did I mention the car? .. The vehicle for the Carmelite Sisters in Maubisse to distribute nutrition. [In a country with is officially a bad worst, out of 83 countries, with respect to child height and weight data. {See: http://globalnutritionreport.org/ }
  - Poor Lindsay seems to take one step forward and two back …
  - The vehicle as a stand alone application to TRF in Evanston was declined.
  - Nevertheless, undaunted, he is winning:
  - A $10,000 AUD Anonymous Donation from a secret Rotarian sort of puts Foundation at Evanston to shame.
  - Nevertheless, ever supportive, D9800 TRF has agreed, outside of their strict TRF guidelines to free up $6,000 AUD
  - Bendigo Maubisse Friendship Committee have committed $5,000 AUD, contingent upon my receiving email from Maubisse sub-district administration confirming community agreement to the vehicle project.
  - Our club has committed $20,000 AUD
  - Undaunted, we push on !!! Please do speak to any philanthropic friends … !!!
  - An old mate of mine CEO Australian National Shipping Line has promised to look favourably on vehicle shipping costs

Joke of the week

A housewife with three young children was getting dinner ready when the phone rang. The six-year-old picked it up and said, "Hi, Daddy!" and she began telling him about her day.
She then passed the phone to her brother and sister as was the custom whenever Daddy called from work.
When it was finally the wife's turn to talk she took the receiver and said, "Hi, honey."
"Thank goodness, lady," the voice on the other end replied. "I just called to tell you that the wallpaper you ordered is here!"

MONDAY: It's fun to cook for Tom. Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbours were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls.
TUESDAY: Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn't dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper.
WEDNESDAY: A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can't say it improved the rice any.
THURSDAY: Today Tom asked for salad again. I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients, lay on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden.
FRIDAY: I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left.
SATURDAY: Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday (oh boy).For some reason Tom keeps counting to ten.
SUNDAY: Tom's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast but all I had was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment.
GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a very exciting week. I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom. If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with chocolate moose.
