Club Calendar

Hi all,

Kangaroo Flat Rotary will have Sue Masters from Haven speaking on Homelessness in Bendigo. It will be at our usual meeting on Monday June 4, at 6 for 6:30pm. I would like to see a representative from each club. I'm also inviting some community members. I hope this may lead to some ongoing discussions.

I need rsvp as soon as you can so I can make sure we all get fed!

Visitors DG Peter and Anne along with Dr Phil Hill [Dentist] and Clare Hill, of RC Fitzroy, supported by his brother Frank; Paul call me Ned, Landscaping Champion, and our guest Speaker Sergeant Margaret Singe of VicPol.

President George delivered awards to three members:

Geoff Michell for emailing the minutes of last night’s board meeting within two hours of meeting close;

Rob Rosaia forsaking an Italian Night at Strath to attend the board meeting, and

Glenn Maloney for promising to repair our lectern.

Then, George launched into a précis of a very busy board meeting.

Dr Hill, on behalf of Solar Smiles Dental Charity [RC’s Albert Park and Fitzroy] suggested we contribute to the “oily rag” which “runs” SSDC, after presenting tales of dental abscesses in East Timor, over our breakfast.

Ray Carrington reported a “had to extend the table” meeting Sunday, of the Rotary Friendship Exchange Team preparing for Scotland in August.

We presented an Appreciation Certificate from Bendigo RSL to Kevin Reade on behalf of all our Team at Gunfire Breakfast ANZAC DAY.

Sergeant Margaret Singe

Within a Police Force which focuses on community involvement and prevention rather than reaction, Margaret has several roles and interests, including:

Family Violence Advisor:

To our chagrin, we learn that Bendigo averages one hundred and fifty family violence reports per month, and research indicates that such figure is only forty per cent of actual.

Managing The Proactive Police Unit; and,

The Court Diversion Programme.

Strategies to address family violence include Art Projects as a medium to educate youth:

Students are invited to create art work with family violence theme, after presentations and discussions;

E.g., Catherine Macauley College Art Project:

Crusoe College’s workshop “Breaking The Mould” conscripted a street artist to create a vivid mural.

And, requests for Banners and T Shirt designs promoted even more talent:

Cultural norms within migrant groups are gently addressed, assimilating newcomers to our ideals.

Never to rest, Margaret launches into the International Day For The Elimination of Violence Against Women, November 25^th each year:

Seven hundred strong, they walked through Bendigo last year, carrying banners designed by over twenty businesses and community groups.

Admitting to being passionate for her causes, she’s promoting “One Million Stars to End Violence” weaving project, and, for youth, the Blue Light Boxing programme.

KIDZFLIP is a Macedon Ranges engagement of youth at risk, they building and painting skate boards at first, before tentatively moving along to rehabilitation.

Having found a spare minute each day, Margaret is now promulgating a new Court Diversion Programme.

Our Toni Carrington has volunteered to liaise with Margaret to explore opportunity for Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst to effectively contribute to the causes.

Margaret has been in the role of The Police Force Family Violence Advisor, Loddon Campaspe area, for six years, having worked in several disciplines within the Force over thirty five years.

She’s supported her policing career with academic studies focussing on leadership, management, and risk mitigation:

Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Social Science [Risk Management], Diploma of Frontline Management, and a Certificate in Training and Assessment.

Her passion was recognised in 2016 as an awardee of the 41 Club Bill Horman Victoria Police Community Service Award

DG Peter Frueh reminded us of the successful state-wide mentoring programme twixt Rotary and VicPol.
