Co-President's report
Co-Presidents report – 7 July, 2024

Well, the new Rotary year started with a nice and relaxing meeting. Lily Brennan, who went through the Victorian Police Blue Light One-to One program, shared her positive RYPEN participation experiences in presence of John Dalton who runs the Blue Light program. Also, Amy Kinder thanked us on behalf of Anglicare for our well appreciated support.

Many Rotarians attended the funeral of Bryan Griffiths, who was the serving President of Rochester Rotary Club. It was estimated there were at least 300 people attending the graveside service. It was Angela Beutel’s wish, Bryan’s partner, to donate to Polio Plus in honour of Bryan. Again, the Polio Plus link is https://my.rotary.org/en/polioplus-fund (if you have a MyRotary account, just log in, or use the guest login link).

The changeover function at Camp Getaway went well and was very much enjoyed by those who attended to celebrate our achievements. Thank you to PDG Ron Payne, who represented District 9800, and Deputy Mayor Matt Evens who represented the City of Greater Bendigo. Congratulations to Barb Mitchell and Stew Annan on their well-deserved Paul Harris Fellowship, and the new board: Paul Henderson and Ted Gretgrix (secretary and minute secretary), Madeleine Schoo (treasurer), Jim Rolfe (club service), Liz Commadeur (community service), Kevin Reade (fundraising), Stew Annan (youth service), Geoff Michell (international service) and Allie Lyall (Foundation).

The Annual Report will be made available via Club Runner. It demonstrates the achievements of our club over the 2023-2024 year. There will be a few hard copies of the report available at our next club meeting. Thank you again for all your support you give to make the community a better place.

Last but certainly not least, there will be a farewell dinner for longstanding club member Maurice Woodburn on Monday 15 July at Pat’s Rising Sun, 6pm for a 6.30pm start.

In the meantime, we look forward to seeing you at our next club meeting on 17 July. Please note that there is no club meeting this Wednesday, 10th of July. Keep warm.
Co-presidents Ray Carrington and Adrian Schoo

Guest Speaker Report for July 3, 2024

This week we heard from Lily Brennan pictured above, who attended the RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment) weekend gathering. Lily is a teenaged girl with a somewhat problematic family background, and some neurodiversity issues, as explained by her mother who accompanied her to our meeting. Lily’s RYPEN experience was backed by John Dalton, well known to us through his continuing excellent work with Blue Light, and of course, through Stew Annan’s ceaseless work in the area.
Lily related the weekend’s activities and challenges: the rope challenge, the poverty dinner (1 bean, and a handful of rice, to show how the other half lives) and the fun she had meeting and relating to her peers. How the weekend and the people helped her to deal with her tics and mental challenges and gave her the confidence and the ability to not have these rule her life. Lily’s mother said she was amazed and thrilled with Lily’s improved personality, increased confidence, and problem solving.
Lily addressed a room full of people, answered questions, and conducted herself wonderfully. The experience was inspirational, and we thank her for her bravery.
We also welcomed Amy Kinder and Holly from the Anglicare Foster care and Kinship Program. They came to thank us for our BBQ support at their annual picnic. Amy related that they currently have 54 foster carers in our area, down from the usual 90, which can partly be explained by the increase in community care/kinship placements. They still received 396 requests over the past 12 months, and were able to place 173, meaning that many have to wait. She said that they are always looking for new foster carers, for obvious reasons.
We assured her that we would be at the picnic again this year and thanked her for her message. (Oh, and the chocolates)
Chris.
