Welcome back Amy and welcome to Bryan Griffiths from Rochester RC.
Easter week is a big commitment, so a vote was taken regarding having the meeting on April 1st (no, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke!) The majority of members agreed to cancel this meeting. We will need a large number of members helping out on both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. At present, the Good Friday market looks like it is going to be our biggest yet.
This means that the April Club Forum will be held on April 8th.

The RC of Bendigo is celebrating it’s 90th birthday on 22nd August.
This is a Save the Date notice – formal invitations will be sent out mid-year.
We have received thank you letters from:
1. The Blue Ribbon Foundation for our donation of $70.50 from the fines session conducted earlier in the year and
2. Inner Wheel Club of Bendigo for the opportunity of working one of the BBQ stalls at Australia Day. The payment they received for the day will go directly to local charities.
All members will have received a letter from Paul Kirkpatrick and Paul Henderson regarding the RI Innovative and Flexible Club project. They welcome all suggestions regarding possible options and as Paul H said this am, speak to people outside Rotary to get some suggestions as to what might attract them to join Rotary.
Next week there will be an opportunity to discuss this project further. After this we will need to vote on whether the club becomes involved.

Our guest speaker this week was Grant Lock speaking about the 24 years he and his wife worked in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
He has written a book of these experiences – Shoot me First. The title references one of his experiences of confronting people threatening to shoot some of his workers who were rebuilding a girl’s school (obviously they didn’t shoot him).
Grant started out farming (cattle and broad acre) at Kimba on the Eyre Peninsula in SA.  Their journey stated in 1984 when they moved their family to a desert town in Pakistan to work on a program to develop community programs to support various sectors of the community. They left after 5 years because they were accused of being spies for India. They were able to hand over the work they were doing to the Pakistani team they had been mentoring.
They moved further inland where they helped with projects to build or rebuild schools and hospitals.
Grant did some extra training that allowed him to begin teaching, so he started teaching English to refugees from Afghanistan. He had to leave Pakistan due to various false allegations and has been refused re-entry to the country. They came back to Australia for a short while before returning to Afghanistan (Kabul) to continue their work.
Grant and his wife are now living back in Australia – Grant doing writing and public talks and his wife is still supporting women to develop skills to earn an income in Afghanistan.

Another night of fellowship & fun.
Our club has reserved 40 excellent seats (upper stalls) at the new theatre, to see UK comedian, Ross Noble.  27 tickets have already been sold, at the discounted price of $43.00 each.  We need to know by Thursday 19 March, if other Rotarians or friends intend to go to the concert.  At that point, we need to inform the Capital Theatre so that tickets not required can be released back to the general public.

I have received an update from David Breaden with new email and phone contact, these are accessible via club runner. The rest of the message is attached;
 
The wet has left.  Yes it was big (like around 280mm in 3 days), but minimal flooding and soon drained away.  Now it’s warming up from 24-26 each day to around 28-30.  Not as bad as it seems you’ve been subjected to.
