President’s Report

This week’s meeting will be again held Via ZOOM

Hi to all, again we will conduct our meeting via Zoom although regional Victoria has had some relief from Covid lockdown, there are still patron
number restrictions on venues serving food
Unfortunately our tree planting activity on Sunday at the gateway to Bendigo (Huntly) was cancelled. Thanks to all from our Club that had planned
(13) to volunteer their services. The organisers were planning were for 100+ helpers to attend and hoping to plant around 3000 trees.
John Cannon, has so far surpassed his original forecast, as we go to print, pledges are fast approaching the $2000 mark. Still opportunity to get on
board and support John on his quest to support Food Share. I have advised John on his walks to achieve the 10000 steps per day is to make sure he
turns around after 5000 steps otherwise he could end up in Melbourne or somewhere.
Board meeting is on this Tuesday via: Zoom commencing at 5: 00 pm all welcome to log in, use the normal Wednesday link in the bulletin.

Guest Speakers
Guest Speaker

The guest speakers for the meeting were Anne and Peter Frueh. Anne is the President of the Balwyn Rotary Club and Peter is a Past District Governor of District 9800. Anne and Peter outlined the history and operation of the Camberwell Market. The Camberwell Market has been in operation for forty five years. Anne mentioned that it almost didn't happen. It was but for the casting vote for the then President, Jim Hooper, that the market was established. Forty five years and twenty million dollars later the market is still going strong.

Income from the market is derived from the hiring of sites and entry donations which average about $2K per week. Market organisers faced the challenges of Sunday Trading in 1997. There was a lot of negotiation at this time but times have changed with local traders now realising the advantages of the market. The market has grown to the point where a paid manager is required to oversee the operation. The members of three other Clubs support Balwyn each week. The $100 weekly fee for each supporting member is sufficient for this to be the major fundraiser for the other three clubs.

The Balwyn Rotary Club owns and operates the Market through a separate Board of  Directors. The Club enjoys very good relationships with the Boroondara Council which receives 30% of the takings. These takings form the basis of Community grants which are available each year. Market organisers have introduced an online booking arrangement and now depending on restrictions operate within the confines of a covid safe plan. The parameters of nothing new and no food seemed to have established good levels of quality control.

Peter highlighted the importance of markets from the point of view of Community. The market is a place to meet, it is dog friendly and buskers are encouraged. Anne and Peter's presentation facilitated a lot of discussion about the implications for our Club. Bendigo already has a weekly Sunday Market and the Australia Day and Easter Markets enjoy a very good reputation. The use of a car park and a focus of reuse and recycle would be interesting themes to pursue. Members are also conscious that the Opportunity Shops have a focus on Reuse and Recycle. We express our thanks to Anne and Peter for being our guests and we congratulate them on their wonderful contributions to Rotary and the Community.

Year 11-12 Scholarship Grants Available from October 1st

The District Foundation Year 11-12 Scholarship Program has been enormously effective in assisting
talented and motivated students facing financial hardship to complete their secondary education.
Most recipients so far have also gone on to commence tertiary education. Clubs have also used this
opportunity to strengthen their relationship with local schools and inspire participation in
other Rotary Youth programs.

The District Foundation Committee is once again inviting D9800 clubs to participate in this program.
Ten Year 11-12 Scholarship Grants will be made available this year for clubs to offer to local schools
for the 2022-2023 school years. The grant of $1,000 will match your club’s contribution of $1,000 to
provide the scholarship over the two-year period.

If your club would like to take this opportunity to participate, we recommend starting discussions
with your candidate school now.

Applications will open on October 1st 2021 and will close on Friday November 12th 2021.
Preference will be given to clubs who have not previously had a scholarship grant, after which
it will be first come first served.

Application forms and grant guidelines can be downloaded from the District 9800 website:

Alternatively email the Chair of the District 9800 Humanitarian Grants Committee Richard Blakeman
and request the forms be emailed to you:  foundation.grants@rotary9800.org
