This week’s meeting will be again held Via ZOOM

Great speaker in Doug the Friendly Butcher last week, a true Bendigo Icon.

Geoff informed me that the Timor Leste committee under the new structure has started to organise more knitting, also a container has arrived in Maubisse with knitted garments being distributed to the locals and very much appreciated.

John Cannon continues his superb contribution with an excess of 15000 steps per day. Spotted at Big Hill during the week, I think he forgot to turn around that day.
Continuing research into proposed antique and collectables proposal, not a lot of joy as all have been postponed for obvious reasons, but making some contacts.

Reminder to all members, Clubs in our District are invited to submit candidates for past Presidents roles on the D.G. Nominating Committee. This Committee is set up to propose the best available candidates for the next Districts Governor Nominee (2024 – 2025) if any members are interested please contact myself.

Foundation News
As you may know, Rotary Foundation Australia (RFA) is one of The Rotary Foundation’s eight Associate Foundations around the world.  We enable Australians – both individuals and organisations – to make tax deductible gifts to the Foundation.

I am pleased to announce that RFA has just launched a new websiteRotaryFoundationAustralia.org.au.  It provides material that is highly informative – both to the public and to Rotary members.  Please click the link and visit the site, I think you’ll find it very useful.

For Rotarians, a key resource in the site is the My Foundation page.  Think of it as the go‑to page you’ve always wanted, with links to a whole range of resources, such as how-to’s,  brochures and forms, as well as frequently used pages in rotary.org.

The site also displays stories about grant-funded projects that Australian clubs have pursued to deliver significant and sustainable impact.  Our clubs have so many great stories to tell about their amazing grant-funded projects and I would encourage you to submit stories for inclusion in the site.

A key audience we aim to influence through the site is corporations and wealthy individuals who may be interested in helping to fund large Rotary projects.  If you have:
·         a great project that is in need of significant funding, or
·         Contacts with a corporation or wealthy individual who may wish to support Rotary with a gift of A$50,000 or more,
Please contact me at rfa@rotary.org.

Rotary Foundation Australia looks forward to supporting your endeavours by helping you to fund high-impact projects – it’s by making an impact that Rotary thrives.

Kind regards

Chair, Rotary Foundation Australia

Guest Speakers
Guest Speaker
The guest speaker for the meeting was Doug Greenwell. Doug is a long standing businessman in Bendigp who currently owns the Variety Store at Strath Village. Grand final week is an important one for Doug's business. He expects to sell seven thousand balloons and a thousand posters in the lead up to the big day. Doug is a foundation member of the Rotary Club of Kangaroo Flat so the meeting provided the opportunity for him to renew acquaintances with many Rotary colleagues. Doug was in the Butchery trade and was involved in abattoirs in Sale before moving to Bendigo with his family.

On arrival in Bendigo Doug worked with the Oliver chain of butchers which also had shops in Melbourne. He worked his way up and eventually with the help of borrowings of $80K at an interest rate of 21% took over the business. From there he rebranded the business as "Doug the Friendly Butcher" and opened shops in Eaglehawk and Maryborough. Through clever advertising including personal  television appearances and discounting he was able to build up his business to the extent that queues were often seen outside his shops.

He eventually grew tied of Butchery and his association with George Anderson, a key person in the discounting business in Bendigo, sparked the idea of a Variety Store. Doug retold many amazing stories of this time and the old adage of "Truth is Stranger than Fiction" rang true as he recounted incidents of George including him having a stash of cash worth $600K in the boot of a limousine. Doug was able to source a good quantity of stock at a reasonable price to get the business off to a good start. He has a forward looking and optimistic approach to business.

It was apparent to members that Doug embodies many of the attributes of successful small business that Kerry Anderson (suspect there is no connection with George) identified in her presentation last week. In speaking so warmly about his staff Doug highlighted the importance of collaboration. Some staff members have worked in the business for the whole time and success wouldn't be possible without that extra commitment such as a willingness to work weekends. Doug's presentation was both entertaining and informative. He is a wonderful citizen of Bendigo and we thank him for being our guest.
STEPTEMBER FOR FOODSHARE

Sat 25 Sept
This morning I hiked for about 1 hour from Crusoe Reservoir car park to the top of Big Hill.
Attached is a photo showing the geodetic marker, about 3 klms west from Calder Highway. 412 mts above sea level.
The other photo is looking south over the western section of Belvoir Park Rd.
My challenge is motivating me to explore areas I have never been to before.
The hike there and back took about 2 hours and was about 13,000 steps.

If your club is looking for a new Community Service project, we’ve got just the event for you.

As we approach our annual Mental Health Month campaign, we're encouraging everyone to get outside for a walk and help us Lift the Lid on Mental Illness. Whether you live near a scheduled event or even if you are in a lockdown area, we've found a way to get everyone walking this year!

Mental health should be on everyone’s agenda and that’s why the Lift The Lid Walk for Mental Health is just that, a walk, not a race. It offers members of our communities an opportunity to get together, to have a chat, “Lift the Lid” on mental illness, and in the process, raise much needed funds for mental health research.

With the amazing support of Rotary clubs so far, we've already grown to 15 locations committed nationally to holding Lift the Lid Walk events in their communities in 2021. We’re growing every week and you can see these locations on our website.

After all the ups and downs this year has thrown at us, we thought it was really important to try and get as many people involved as we could. However big or small your club is, in addition to our traditional event options, this year we can get you walking through our new extra simple, virtual neighbourhood format. All you have to do is register your club’s interest to be involved, pick a date and encourage your members and friends to register and get walking.

To find out more and register for this year please fill out the Expression of Interest Form and return it to us.

WE ALL HAVE SOMEONE TO WALK FOR!!!

Two tips from Kitty Flanagan
81:  Wellness is not a word  This word is everywhere now, it's inescapable, but it's as dumb as saying 'Healthosity' or 'Nutritionative'

82:  The word Budget should never be paired with any of the following:-
  • Seafood
  • Airline
  • Plastic Surgery
  • Dental work
