Co-President's report

Co-Presidents report – 1 August 2024

Firstly, our meeting this week.  Thank you Jim Rolfe, for the most interesting industry visit you organised for our members to the Tramways Depot on Wednesday.

Although it was a very cold morning, we listened with a warm heart to the incredible journey of the museum, and its plans for the future.  Bendigo is lucky to have this outstanding museum and tourist attraction, and a highly skilled team of craftsmen and volunteers who contribute to its survival and ongoing success.  Our thanks go also to the CEO of Bendigo Heritage Attractions, James Reade, who was our very entertaining and accommodating tour guide.  The coffee/tea, warm breakfast and fellowship in the tram café after the tour topped it off.

Our Rotary Community Group (District’s Group 5 extends from Gisborne to Swan Hill) met on Saturday 27th July for the first time.  Thank you, Alison Bacon, our Rotary Community Leader, for facilitating this meeting.  Although there is a diversity between clubs, and we are separated by quite a distance, there is a strong willingness to work together for the benefit of who we serve as Rotarians.  Outcomes include a name for our Rotary Group, possible subgroups and a meeting schedule that includes regular Zoom meetings.

The 99th year celebration of the Rotary Club of Bendigo on 30th July was a great evening.  One of the highlights was to listen to our DG, Michael Lapina, who was invited to sing one of the songs he sang at Carols by Candlelight last Christmas.  What a mighty voice he has!

Bendigo South RC has organised a free training session on ‘Lessons in Disaster’ on Sunday, 18th August 2024 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm at the California Gully Mechanics Institute Hall, 12 School Street, California Gully.  A minimum of 12 participants are needed.  See the flyer in last week’s bulletin for more information on the session and how to book.

Just a reminder that the trip to Donations In Kind warehouse will be on Saturday, 10th August.  Eric Bish, the President of Rochester RC, will generously be the bus driver for the day.  The bus will be leaving from Rotary Gateway Park, Kangaroo Flat, at 8.30am, where there are plenty of car parking spaces available.  There are still seats available, so if any member wants to be part of what promises to be a really good day, please contact either Adrian or Ray as soon as you can to register.  The cost is $20 pp, with lunch provided at DIK.  We look forward to the tour to see what is available for us and other clubs to use for our local, regional and international projects.

Bendigo Tramways Depot Industry Visit

James Reade, the CEO of Bendigo Heritage Attractions (pictured right), provided a comprehensive talk and tour of the Bendigo Tramways Depot at the Club's Industry visit on July 31st. It was interesting to note the number of members who had used the Bendigo tramway network before it was closed in 1972. This was a fond memory for many. Bendigo Tramways employs sixty-five staff and there are fifteen volunteers supporting the enterprise. With over 150,000 visitors each year it is the city's number one tourist attraction.

The Bendigo Tramway network was opened in 1890. It relied on horsepower and batteries before the use of electricity. For a period of time the trams were powered by batteries. Batteries however didn't provide enough power to negotiate the View Street hill, so the faithful horse was called on to provide supplementary power. At the time of closure in 1972 a decision was made to donate the Bendigo trams to interested museums. This was fiercely opposed by a rebel group which effectively protested leading to the decision being reversed.

Funding of 14 million dollars has seen the development of the site both as a tourist attraction and workshop. James outlined how the extensive facilities and equipment are used to maintain and restore trams which are an important part of the heritage of Bendigo and beyond. A new workshop on what was a derelict site at the back is providing valuable storage space and workshop facilities. There are exciting plans in place to possibly open Mitchell Street and View Street to trams and to develop the gas works site which has tram access.

The site is owned by the council and Bendigo tramways owns all the rolling stock. Every effort is being made to salvage old trams. James recounted one example where an old tram which was being used as shearing quarters was salvaged from Elmore. The pride of the fleet is the Birney trams which were imported from America 100 years ago. Of the 12 remaining in the world Bendigo has 7. The tram driven by King Charles is on display. We thank James and the staff for their hospitality and the comprehensive and engaging talk and tour.
