Co-President's report

Co-presidents report February 21, 2025

This week, our guest speaker was Caity Hickey, a physiotherapist and partner in a relatively new gym to Bendigo, Kieser, situated in the old Bendigo Timber Company building (for those with long memories!), latterly occupied by Forty Winks, in Williamson Street.
Caity gave us a most interesting and informative presentation on the importance of performing movement and strength conditioning exercises for senior citizens as they get older. The whole aim is to increase one’s longevity and age well along the way. For a number of us, this was a thought-provoking reminder of the many benefits of
exercising consistently throughout one’s life. Chris has included a much more detailed account of Caity’s presentation elsewhere in this bulletin.

Last Saturday morning, a few of us provided a barbeque on behalf of Integra, a Ballarat-based company that is developing a huge housing estate centred around Waratah Rd, Huntly, in the proximity of the Huntly Railway Station. The barbeque was for members of the public coming to look at several display homes in the area, and our presence was well received by them and Integra representatives. It was a relatively simple event for us, running from 10.30 to around 1.30, and helped to put our club's name out there again. Many thanks to Kevin Reade and Rob Rosaia for all their prior organising and work on the day. Also, to his assistants, Ray, and Rob’s ex-work colleague, the indefatigable Michelle. Michelle always helps us out on Australia Day, and we are always grateful for her assistance.

Thanks very much, Michelle.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY. SUNDAY, 2 ND MARCH, 10.30 to 12.30, IRONSTONE RD, EPSOM.
This is an opportunity for our club to be seen to be doing something extremely practical and attention-getting in our community. This is an Australia-wide event, very much deserving of our support as a community service organisation. The more members we can have attending on the day, the more we get our image out there as a can- do, desirable organisation to be involved with.

We have contacted the Bendigo Advertiser, who will do their best to publish an article or two about our involvement in this local event, and how the public can support it. On the day, we will also have promotional material about our club for distribution to members of the public.

The event is only for 2 hours, so we are appealing for members to do their best to give some time on the day and preferably bring along some family members and friends if at all possible. There will be some light refreshment, plus tea and coffee provided after the event.

Bring gardening gloves, a hat, some water and a sense of humour. You never know what we may find … We also need a few trailers to take rubbish to the tip, so bring one if you can, please.
It is essential to register for OH & S and insurance purposes. This can be done via the internet prior to the event, or onsite on the day. Colleen has put a direct link elsewhere in this bulletin for pre-event registration.
Another way … The Ray C way of registering a few days ago (aka registering for dummies …) was to search under “Cleanup Australia Day Bendigo”. There, our club link appears very early and prominently, and then it’s a simple matter to click on the link “Join This Site” and put in a very few personal details. Voila!

Guest Speaker - Caity Hickey from Keiser Physiotherapy

Today we are all thinking of not just the length of life, but the ability to keep doing the things that give that life meaning and purpose.

Caity gave us all a blueprint for increasing our longevity and ensuring that we can. She mentioned that we normally lose 2% of our muscle strength per year after the age of 40, rising to 4.5% per year after 60.  Why is this important? Because muscles control all our movement. They bring stability to our bones and joints, control the power and force we bring to walking, running, picking up grandchildren, getting up out of the couch, as well as protecting, storing and releasing energy.

The Kieser system is designed to build muscle strength using exercise machines under the guidance of exercise scientists. This involves twice weekly sessions, with a progressive overload weight program on seven or eight different machines, where a single set of 90 to 120 seconds is required rather than repeating the usual three sets of ten.

The many benefits of strength training twice per week?
 Reduced anxiety and depression boosting self-esteem.
 Improvement in Cholesterol levels.
 Lowered blood pressure.
 Minimising joint pain.
 Improving proprioception, your body’s ability to sense movement and location e.g.     stepping off a kerb in safety.
 Reduced risk of falls, heart disease and some cancers.
 The big one - improving bone density and staving off osteoporosis.
 Improving joint stability.
 Improving sleep quality.

Finally, we have been hearing for ages that mature aged people should be using strength training. This has seldom been explained as convincingly as in Caity’s address, and we thank her very much for her time and efforts.
