Co-President's report
Co-Presidents report – 21st August 2024

This week, our guest speaker was Pam Erny who presented on Cycling Without Age Bendigo.  What a wonderful program this is, with its benefits for the vulnerable aged in our community.  This seems like the type of program worthy of our support - please read Jim Rolfe’s summation of Pam’s presentation and see if you agree with us.
Together with members of other Rotary clubs, Madeleine and Adrian attended the Gender and Disaster training last weekend, organised by Bendigo South RC.  This researched-based training was based on the impact of major disasters on gender, such as major bushfires and floods Victoria has experienced in recent years, and their effect on mental health and family violence.  This training was the first one of a pilot program and feedback was encouraged to assist optimising the program.  More news will be forthcoming as the program evolves.
Bendigo Foodshare is opening its new food relief warehouse in Breen Street, Golden Square, on Friday, 6th September, 2024 at 9.30am. The address is 227 Breen St, near the Laurel St railway bridge.
Please inform Kevin Reade if you can help, even for just a couple of hours, with the BBQ at the Federation Picnic, Malone Park, Marong, this Sunday, 23th August.  As we have previously mentioned, it is always a good day, with plenty of fellowship and an opportunity to see some great trucks, tractors, cars and motor bikes – some fully restored – others still in various stages of restoration.
In relation to the Knitting Program for Timor Leste, probably in the next couple of months we will put out a call for a small number of volunteers to help out at Quality Wool, Harpin St, East Bendigo, to make up 3 or 4 bales of goods in preparation for shipment to Dili and thence onwards.
Spoiler Alert:  In the most recent edition of our Rotary Down Under magazine, there are two most interesting articles.  One is a 3-page article on the effectiveness of the Indigenous Health Scholarship Program, of which we have allocated $7500 in support this year.  The other is to do with the imminent activation of the Specialist Hub, which is intended to be a support resource for all clubs as part of our 3-year Regionalisation Trial.  Both of these articles will be published in full in next weeks’ bulletin.
In the meantime, please make our club meeting on 4th September a must to attend.  Ron and Deb Payne will share their experiences of the time leading up to, and during, Ron’s term as our District Governor last Rotary year.
See you then.

Cycling Without Age - Pam Erny
Pam has been a key player in the establishment of Cycling Without Age Bendigo (CAWB). CAW is an International Organisation which provides cycling outings for people in Aged Care Facilities. Volunteer pilots accompany Aged Care residents for rides on a trishaw which takes up to two passengers. Trishaws are imported from Denmark and cost in the vicinity of $21K. The bikes are fitted out with all the comforts necessary for the frailer members of our community.
CWA was started in 2012 in Copenhagen. The initiative is now established in 42 countries. There are forty chapters in Australia. Pam first heard about the program through Friends of the Rail Trail in Castlemaine. Good support has been forthcoming from Aged Care facilities in Bendigo. BUPA in Holdsworth Road has set aside some storage space for the trishaws. Lake Weeroona and the Botanical Gardens in White Hills have suitable tracks which can be used by CAWB. There is an upcoming promotion planned at Lake Weeroona for CAWB.
There is a need to train twelve pilots. Training for four has been completed. A small group of committee members is drawing up an agreement to borrow a trishaw from CAW.  The "wind in your hair slogan" captures the benefits for both those in Aged Care Facilities and the pilots. The benefits for those not having the opportunity for outings go beyond the exhilaration of nature and include the forming of friendships and a growth in confidence. Pam shared a very moving example of CWA providing the first outing for someone who had been shut in for sixteen years.
CAWB is yet to establish steady streams of income. Pam spends a lot of time writing submissions and the committee organises fundraising events from time to time. Pam outlined possible involvement in the fundraising events of the Club. There are real possibilities for mutual benefits at an event such as the upcoming Swap Meet. Pam's presentation created a lot of interest for members. CAWB is certainly in the category of an organisation making a really positive impact in the lives of lonely people. We look forward to further involvement with CAWB.
