Co-President's report
Co-Presidents Report - Sept 17

A moment's silence was observed at the start of our meeting remembering Mark Weragoda who sadly, passed away last week.

Mark will be remembered as member who went out of his way to further the aims of Rotary and the Club. His contributions to the running of the Club are a testament to his commitment to Rotary. Mark often provided personal help and advice to members.

District 9800 also revered Mark both as an Assistant Governor and for the several District committee positions he held over a long period of time.
Stew updated the Club about the progress of the trees we planted recently and upcoming working bees.

Cathie spoke about the visit to the RIMERN warehouse with RC Bendigo South Rotarians. There was general support to investigate if it could be a viable multi-club project.

Brian gave a great update on his work in Uganda and the outcome of the support we have provided - see the report below.

Liz Bannon from RC Bendigo also spoke to the club about a “No to Domestic Violence and Yes to Respectful Relationships” walk she is organising. Again, details are below.

Farewell Mark Weragoda
A large number of Bendigo Sandhurst Rotarians attended the funeral of long-serving and popular club member Mark Weragoda on Friday.

The mourners also included Rotarians from other clubs, former club members and three former district governors.

The service highlighted Mark’s love of life, his family and community. His love of Abba, Elvis, gardening and curry was also celebrated.

Born in Sri Lanka, Mark came to Australia with his family as a young child and grew up in central Victoria. He went on to marry Leonie, and they had two children, Jake and Selina. He was a much-loved Papa to Mahalia.

Mark was inducted into the Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst on 22 June 1991. He is a former club president and a former assistant governor.
He held a range of District committee positions.
He was awarded a PHF with Saphire.

Mark was instrumental in Rotary's role in fundraising from the Bendigo National Swap Meet. He held initial meetings at his home in Sept 1998 with various trade representatives and the club held its first Swap Meet BBQ in November that year.

Apart from being an all round 'good bloke' his trade mark catch phrase of 'what's happening?' will be missed by many. (There were over 400 comments on the Facebook posts!)

Mark also served as a Bendigo City Councillor for the Eppalock Ward in the 2012-2016 term.

He loved his old cars and was a member of the Vintage and Veteran Car Club.
The service was told that for every six or eight cars he had at his house, there were another dozen tucked away elsewhere!

His latest favourite was the blue Mini which had pride of place at the front door of Friday’s service, with a lovely floral display bursting from the boot, courtesy of Selina.

Rotarians formed a guard of honour at the conclusion of the service.
The club sends our love and condolences to Leonie and Mark’s family.

Vale Mark

Guest speaker - Brian Hodge
Brian provided an update for members about his recent visit to the school in Uganda and acknowledged the funding that the club has provided. Brian and his wife Jan opened the school, The Blue Kangaroo, in 2009. There is a particular outreach to children who are orphaned or abandoned. Uganda is a place of extreme violence, poverty and corruption. Brian quoted the story of Patrick whose father was murdered and subsequent to that his mother disappeared. Patrick came to the school with high levels of anxiety and often lashed out at other children. Gradually through the empathetic approach used by Jan he has transformed himself and is achieving very well.

The new tables and chairs which were funded by the club have provided great joy and excitement. Our funds have also been used by Lizzie to update her teaching qualifications. This would not have been possible otherwise. This community is very appreciative of the club's support. Brian passed on little things such as how much the children appreciate stickers especially those which give off an aroma. Brian has opened up other support networks apart from ourselves. The Inglewood Primary School  has supplied reading material as well as setting up a pen pal program with the children of each school.

Brian provided some background information about Uganda, this served as a reminder about the wonderful work he and Jan have undertaken. The population of Uganda has surged from 26 million in 2009 to 60 million presently. The local Pastor doubles as the person who oversees medical care. The community sometimes tries to exploit what it sees as the goodwill and zeal of the missionaries of a bygone era. Brian has needed to be uncompromising in his insistence on aspects such as the importance of regular school attendance. Pleasingly the community is increasingly accepting of such standards. In terms of future support there is a need for new uniforms (cost $512). A local tailor has been sourced and can contribute.

Guest speaker - Liz Bannon
Liz Bannon is a member of Bendigo Rotary. She recently attended a Rotary Conference and was impressed with the work of Ballina Rotary on the issue of domestic violence.

She has taken up the slogan "No to Domestic Violence and Yes to Respectful Relationships" and has been part of the committee which has organised a march in Bendigo to promote this very important cause.

The march, starting in Rosalind Park and extending around the CBD,  will be held on Sunday November 29th. We offer our support to Liz and we congratulate her on taking up this initiative.

A toolkit is available below with more information.
