Life does gain pace as we emerge from AFL into Caulfield and Flemington, Cricket, Tennis Open on the horizon, Soccer overlapping the seasons, and my neighbour telling me I should swim regularly at Bendigo East.

Peter Frueh, a District Governor who passes the “good bloke” pub test, and Anne are officially visiting us.

Partners, spouses, children, family, friends, non-members, are all welcome that morning. I dream of us filling all that ground floor lounge space at The Bridge, to “show off” the vibrant RCoBS family.

And welcome to guest, today, Next Gen Rotarian Meaghan Rogers.

Our guest speaker was Phil Downing, National Sales Manager at our very own Bendigo Telco. His timing was perfect, apropos the

“Four Corners” ABC programme this week, “What’s Wrong With The NBN?”.

I was not aware of the history of Bendigo Telco or the size of the company:

Formed in 2000, when Rob Hunt was in the Chair at Bendigo Bank, in response to the needs of local heavies such as

Bendigo Bank, Coliban Water, Bendigo Health, TAFE, and others, who had been referred “to Melbourne”.

Tastel; Goulburn Valley Telco; and VicWest are just some of the logos of this national company employing some one hundred staff.

[And I thought the action was confined to Williamson Street office !!]

Bendigo Telco is a partner with community enterprises, three million dollars donated to the community since year 2000,

including $5K to Bendigo East pool this month.

Phil stepped us carefully through the algorithm of Commonwealth of Australia; the National Broadband Network;

“Points of Interconnect”; “Regional Service Providers”, [Read “Retailers”]; all the way down the fibre, or wire, to the

quality of our in-premise router/modem, and where not to place it.

We learned that we may be connected:

Fibre to the premise

Fibre to the Node [Read those flash new green boxes appearing around Bendigo along the footpaths, every 800 metres or so];

Fibre to the Basement

Fibre to the Kerb

Wirelessly

To a Tower

To a satellite.

If we’re connected Fibre to the Node, we hope that the ageing [“insulated” by paper in a lead sheath “pumped up by air compressors]

copper wire might have been updated in our street to protection within modern waterproof gel in a plastic sheath.

Same old principle:

You get what you pay for.

With thin margins and over one hundred “Regional Service Providers”, [Read “Retailers”] out there, they are going to try and flog you the least expensive “speed”.

And “speed” means what’s happening this instant:

If we buy a plan which advertises “25 Meg” then we’re going toe experience speeds of 12 to 25 Meg, dependent upon many factors.

And, personally, I learned from Bendigo Telco staff that not all Telcos donate to the community and some have “Help” Desks in “foreign” lands.

Phil did explain that if we wish to preserve voice devices [read “Telephone”], connected by wire or fibre to the world, we need to specifically request that from our “Regional Service Provider”, [Read “Retailer”], when connecting to the NBN.

Cathie raised the important question of Alarm Systems in the home:

Phil explained that a device is available to fit to the Alarm to ensure that the alarm works in a power outage.

Bernadette and I have “moved” over to the NBN, and the process was easy and seamless. What I did not know is that the changeover is a four-step process, which occurs over four specified dates.

We buy “25 Meg” and this morning it’s running at 23.36 Mbps.

It is time for us to put on our thinking caps and see if we can identify people within our community who may be

eligible for recognition for a Shine On award.

The Shine On Awards specifically acknowledge the great volunteer service that people with disability contribute to their local and wider community.

These awards recognise people living with chronic illness/disease, physical or intellectual limitations or mental health disorders, to focus

upon the abilities of those living with disability.

Nominations are to be submitted by November 15^th with the Award Ceremony being held in April 2018. The Shine On committee have provided a

quick outline showing how you and your Club can become involved. If you have any questions about Shine On, or want to contribute to the program,

This is always a great weekend.

“Murder on the Orient Express” is an upcoming American mystery film directed by Kenneth Branagh. The screenplay by Michael Green is based on the 1934 novel.

The film stars: Branagh as Hercule Poirot, with Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Derek Jacobi, Leslie Odom Jr., Michelle Pfeiffer, and Daisy Ridley.

It is scheduled to be released on November 10^th in cinemas with Rotary offered the film as a fundraiser for “EndPolioNow”.

So.....at the Bendigo Cinema, on Thursday November 9^th, at 6.45pm, there will be a screening as a fund raiser for End Polio Now!

The price of tickets will be $20

with $8 being donated to “EndPolioNow”.
