Last week in Rotary

Wednesday 24th-The few stalwarts braved the gusty winds along Platform 1 at the Bendigo Railway Station to serve up freshly cooked snags for the inbound and outbound train travelers. Supported by an effective PA system, travelers were very surprised to be greeted by the aroma of onions wafting around the station. In an early planned attack Kev and Bruce supported by Maurice and Barb, had plenty of food ready for the 4.oopm start. Whoosh and in they came, hungry hordes of school kids and it was nearly panic stations as they quickly devoured what was initially prepared. Then there was a lapse until the next train and so it continued for train after train until 7.00pm. Thanks to all who helped and in particular the VLine staff who ably assisted in the promotion and regular platform cleanup.

Wednesday 24th- The Foundation Dinner at the Rising Sun was supported by 24 Rotarians and their partners. Pat was left stranded with two staff “off crook”, so he had to man the kitchen plus other duties; however he did have time to come out for a chat and to explain his most generous offer to support the Rotary Foundation. This was a fellowship dinner to support the “End Polio Now” campaign and the funds raised were matched by District with a multiplication factor by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. For every dollar we raised it will equate to $7.50 going to the campaign.
Thanks Pat for your support and magnificent hospitality as an enjoyable evening was had by all. Apologies to member as we did say there would be NO speeches, however the opportunity to explain how the night came about and the funding structure for the “End Polio now campaign”, could not be left unsaid!.

Sunday 28th. BBQ catering for the The Bendigo Cycling Classic. This was a fundraising event for two fantastic Bendigo-based charities to be held in the Bendigo Civic Gardens. 11.00am-2.30pm
100% of all funds raised via entries to Bendigo Cycling Classic will be donated 50/50 to The OTIS Foundation and Give Me 5 for Kids in Bendigo.

Sunday 28th- Jamshod (means gathering in Dari) dinner to support Bendigo Community Health. 6.00-8.30pm. Five members attended on Sunday evening to partake in a wonderful meal prepared by Zahira’s wife who has started a catering business.  We all went back for seconds of Manto (lamb dumplings), Ashak, (vegetable dumplings), red kidney beans, chick peas, salads and fresh breads.
The purpose of each night is to meet members of the local Afghan men’s group to discuss Afghan culture and enjoy Afghan food, have constructive conversations and develop greater understanding of each other. On each occasion we have the opportunity to introduce ourselves and last night Acting Inspector Craig Gaffee, spoke about his role in the Victorian Police Force and his journey and fielded multiple questions about the law, road rules, licensing etc, etc. This was a great night as you could see and hear about the level of distrust many of the men had about the police, army and government officials in their previous lives, not only in their own country, but during their often perilous journey to Australia.
The dinner has been initiated by Gail Fowler and supported by Bendigo Community Health Services (Kaye Graves and assisted by Ken Gilchrist). The dinner is funded by the Scanlon Foundation.
