Hi fellow Rotarians,
There are a few functions/BBQ’s  coming up – see Bruce’s notices.
A reminder to everyone to check the duty roster in the bulletin and if you can’t get to a meeting when you are rostered for a job, please organise a replacement/swap
Ken Evers is looking after our Club apparel, so if you need more items see him.
Wayne gave a report on the Racism Stops Here event where our club cooked the sausages. Sounded like it went really well.
Our guest speaker was Jeremy Forbes from HALT (Hope Assistance for Local Tradies). Many of the club were involved in the first event in Bendigo at Hume & Iser.
Jeremy has been a tradie for 20 years and has had struggles over these years – financial, physical and emotional. Some of these struggles can be related back to not being well prepared during his apprenticeship and not knowing where to turn to for help.
Last year (following the suicide of a fellow tradie), Jeremy wanted to do something to raise the awareness of how to help tradies know where to go to get help and try to change the culture.
He got support from the local hardware store in Castlemaine and other local businesses to hold a BBQ to raise awareness. The RC of Castlemaine also supported him by cooking the BBQ. This liaison worked extremely well.
He then approached Steven Iser who was supportive of the concept. He developed a relationship with our club and we organised the BBQ for this event.
After this event he was approached by Bendigo Community Health and was offered a 3 year contract to develop and expand the HALT concept over Victoria. He now works part-time with BCH to achieve this. Jeremy wants to work with Rotary clubs across the state to run these events. He wants to develop a model that will be sustainable into the future and one that looks at the emotional, physical and financial wellbeing and also encourages a change of culture in the tradie world where it is ok to get help.
He has developed brochures and a wallet card that provides important phone numbers of where to get help.
At the moment, Jeremy has 8 more breakfasts lined up across the state.
Well done Jeremy.
Cheers Cathie:
