Bulletin Week 7

Congratulation Neville Sharpe

Last weekend Neville Sharpe has been officially inducted into the Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame (as well as the International Karate Federation). The event was a very classy and formal black tie dinner at the Wrest Point Casino in Hobart. Neville has a long record of dedicated service and wonderful achievements in martial arts in various capacities (competitor (an Australian Champion), instructor, international referee and high level of management).

Both George (National ABC-underground orchestra) and President Graeme (Local WinTV-Rochester Safety Expo) appeared on TV with George being the standout performer promulgating the benefits of living in Bendigo. Apparently, as indicated by many, I have a better face for the wireless!

I attended the Rochester Farm and Road Safety Expo on Tuesday where over 600 students had the opportunity to interact with over 24 exhibitors, all of whom had a message relating to staying safe, on farm, home, and school or in the general community. Congratulations must go to the Rotary Club of Rochester for organising this great activity.

Martin Ruffell presented the club with two banners from the Rotary Clubs he and Lisa visited in Iowa, USA. Sounded like a great trip so a future presentation may be in order?

Drought update

Eaglehawk Rotary Club-At our Club's board meeting this week we discussed at length possible ways of raising funds to be channelled directly toward the farming community that are in need.
Bendigo Rotary Club, A fellowship night to raise funds for the NSW Farmers. Friday 31^st August. Bendigo Club. 6.30 onwards.

Community meeting
The City of Greater Bendigo is about to commence the preparation of a Social and Affordable Housing and Living Strategy that will investigate how issues around social housing, affordability and homelessness can be addressed at a local level. The first stage in the project will be a forum that will start to explore these issues with the information gathered helping to inform a discussion paper for the project. Details of the forum are as follows:

Guest Speaker

Chairman Doug Introduced Kaye Graves who has returned to provide us on an update of the processes and systems involved in the resettlement of refugees in Bendigo.

Bendigo Community Health is contracted by the Government to resettle refugees in Bendigo. Initially it was Karen refugees, now some are from Afghanistan, Pakistan and more recently from South Sudan.

The program aims to optimise settlement, with most being very happy in the first six months. However after this initial phase many feel lonely and isolated either from the families, friends or the culture that they have left behind. The challenge for any community is to support new arrivals in a welcoming and culturally sensitive way and to allow the practice of their faith and to be able to celebrate cultural events, without fear of intimidation or disrespect.

After many years of war, internment in camps or treacherous open boat voyages; it takes an incredible long time to gain any sense of understanding the skills and interests of each person, notwithstanding their mental health status. Our use of language is critical, as we need to refer to them now as “Bendigonians of a refugee background”. There must be a long term investment in their resettlement which requires strategic planning and careful coordination.

Kaye highlighted some opportunities in which our members may be involved.

Jamshod (meaning celebration) Dinner, which is to be held in the Catholic Church hall in Short St this Sunday at 6.00pm. This is an opportunity for Afghani men to meet and interact with men to talk about issues and topics which are of interest to them.

Cultural Education Program, where a facilitator can take us through a journey to understand Islam. This is an extended program and would take more than a breakfast meeting.

L2P Driver Education program. It is very difficult for the young people and adults to get their 120 hours of formalised driver training. Given that in the Karen camps there are very few vehicles and in Afghanistan and Pakistan, few, if any legislated rules, the will to be able to own a car and drive here in Bendigo is strong.

The concept of volunteering is very foreign and as such any programs to involve Bendigo refugees need to be taken slowly and with full consultation, as it will take time to settle, understand and then be able to give back to the community which has supported them.

Kaye fielded many question with some interest shown for supporting a cricket program and possibly the Driver Ed program.

Thanks Kaye for another great insight into the programs that you are involved with. Your passion and dedication will certainly inspire us as a club to become more involved in the future.

Our meeting of Wednesday August 29^th will be an Industry Visit to the Bendigo

Tramway Depot. The address is 1 Tramways Avenue (off Hargreaves Street). We

will meet over breakfast and our tour will commence about 7.30 AM. Catering will

be from Peppergreen Farm and will include egg and bacon tarts, croissants, fruit,

tea and coffee. Cost will $15 and will include breakfast and tour. We will gather in

the meals room, which is behind the kiosk for breakfast.
