Feedback from the Board meeting this month:
The Board approved hosting a Rotary Friendship Exchange team in April next year. John Cannon will follow this up.
LOA was granted to Jim Rolfe who has returned to America for another stint of teaching and Peter Harvie. The dates will be on Club Runner.
The knitting project needs to find a new home where there is enough room for storage and sorting. Cath is looking into some options. If anyone has any ideas please contact her.
Mark Weragoda presented a Rotary Knowledge segment (I missed it last week - sorry Mark) on the background to the Federation Picnic.
The Federation Picnic started in 1991. The number of vehicles entered for this inaugral event was 90.
The following year Mark (being a member of the club) volunteered our Rotary Club to do the catering. That first year wasn’t as organised as we are now but the fellowship was great (must have been when the tradition of the Presidential red wine commenced!). In those early years, as well as sausages and hamburgers, there was tea, coffee and soup for sale.
One memory that has stuck in Mark’s memory is 1994 when Princess Di died. It had a noticeable impact on the mood of the event.
This year recorded the highest number of entries for the event – 1200 vehicles were registered.
Next year will probably see some changes to the event as there will be upgrades made to Malone Park.
The guest speaker today was Stan Hendy in his new volunteer role with the SES as a community education facilitator.
He was speaking about Storm Safety as this week is Storm Safe Week.
Storm activity is very common in Victoria. They are unpredictable and occur at any time of the year. They can be very expensive due to the amount of damage they can do.
Stan identified what a severe storm is, what types of things can happen and how we get our warning systems.
The main thrust of the presentation was the importance/value in developing a Home Emergency Plan. A plan takes time to prepare and needs to consider the possible emergency situations that could occur. Stan provided plans for those at the meeting. They can be obtained from www.ses.vic.gov.au When developing a plan you need to consider all household members and include pets and possible visitors. A list of emergency contacts needs to be made as well.
Consider having an emergency kit that contains:
a battery operated radio, torch and batteries, sturdy rubber gloves, first aid kit, non-perishable food, water for 3 days.
Important documents need to be together with the plan – will, passport etc
If you have to evacuate remember to take your mobile phone charger, prescription medication, pet requirements (food, water, leash)
He also gave advise about how to prepare for a storm, what to do and not do during a storm and then after.
The emergency storm line is 132500 for VIC SES. This is for storm damage only. If life is at risk we still need to ring 000.

Martin Ruffell is giving us the heads up for seniors week 9th October Hargreaves Mall BBQ, more to follow.
Wednesday 15th October. Ride to work day Hargreaves Mall 7am to 9am.
Swap Meet is fast approaching Friday 14th to Monday 17th November. Volunteers needed for many different duties, set-up, clean up and the usual BBQ's two BBQ captains needed.

No one believes seniors . . . everyone thinks they are senile.
An elderly couple was celebrating their sixtieth anniversary. The couple had
married as childhood sweethearts and had moved back to their old
neighborhood after they retired. Holding hands, they walked back to their
old school. It was not locked, so they entered, and found the old desk
they'd shared, where Jerry had carved I love you, Sally.
On their way back home, a bag of money fell out of an armored car,
practically landing at their feet. Sally quickly picked it up and, not sure
what to do with it, they took it home. There, she counted the money - fifty
thousand dollars!
Jerry said, We've got to give it back.
Sally said, Finders keepers. She put the money back in the bag and hid it in
their attic.
The next day, two police officers were canvassing the neighborhood looking
for the money, and knocked on their door. Pardon me, did either of you find
a bag that fell out of an armored car yesterday?
Sally said, No.
Jerry said, She's lying. She hid it up in the attic.
Sally said, Don't believe him, he's getting senile
The agents turned to Jerry and began to question him.
One said: Tell us the story from the beginning.
Jerry said, Well, when Sally and I were walking home from school yesterday
......
The first police officer turned to his partner and said, Were outta here!
