Still plenty of people traveling, saw just the 24 members at the meeting this morning, remembering we have to pay for 30, I'm looking forward to everyone returning over the coming weeks.

Great  to have Assistant Governor Greg Noonan at Rotary this morning and we look forward to seeing Greg throughout the year.

Guest Speaker this morning Daryl Jones who following a in the police force moved to the helicopter rescue wing where he spent 14 years from 1987 to 2001 initially as  crew and subsequently a Helicopter pilot. 

One of his first flights in  was during the Hoddle St Massacre where their helicopter was forced to land following several shots

He specifically spoke to the Sydney to Hobart rescue of John Campbell who along with 3 other crew where knocked overboard from the yacht Kingurra, while the others were able to get back to the yacht John who at the time had no safety gear, was washed further a stern by the extreme conditions.

Daryl's Helicopter originally set for a lifeboat search was directed to the Kingurra to rescue John.  The severe conditions which were more extreme than the top level of 12 on the Beaufort Scale which measure extreme weather conditions on the ocean, meant that the rescue was extremely difficult.  John was more than half a mile behind the Yacht in waves that were estimated at 120 -130 feet and winds of around 215 kilometres an hour. As they lowered the winch the officer was pushed backwards by the winds and dragged through a 120  foot wave, he thought he was also in trouble and was about to activate his safety beacon when he come through the other side, just 10 feet from John.   

 

There were further complications as the wince froze with the two men hanging just short of the chopper with John was slipping form his harness.  The operator form within the helicopter was able to lean out in high winds and man handle John on-board but the rescuer was still out on the winch, miraculously the winch began to work and he was soon back inside.  But that wasn’t the final hurdle as the strong winds slowed progress to only 5 knots (normal cruising speed of about 120Knots) they were soon low on fuel eventually landing safety albeit on a football field.

 

The helicopter went on the next morning to rescue another 4 sailors from another yacht pulling the final crew man up just moments before the yacht sank.

Daryl completed over 300 rescues during his time in the Air Rescue wing and it was great to hear from him just some of the great work these men and women do each day.

 

District Conference

Conference dates  March 12 – 13 2016.  Registration cost prior to November 30th is $275.00 per person or $225 for first time attendees.  It would be great to get as many to register as early as possible.

Don't forget to talk to Phil if you want to make part payments (if final payment made after November it will be slightly higher total.

 

Rotary Leadership Program Dates for 2015-16

Four part program the many aspects of Rotary.  They are running a regional course again this year with 4 evening sessions starting   10Aug, then 4 Sept, 12 Oct and 16 Nov.  I'd encourage you to get involved in the program.  More info attached.

 

Upcoming Camp Getaway Working Bee's - Paul Kirkpatrick

Next working bee dates are Friday 7th & Saturday 8th August. Melbourne Park Rotary will be there for a working bee so could be of assistance, and the next weekend Friday 14th & Saturday 15th when Student Exchange will be there. The camp is booked out before these weekends.  Hope to finish the first stage of the Kitchen redevelopment.

Rotary Club of Eaglehawk - Temporary Change of Meeting Location

On the 22nd of June some much anticipated building works commenced on our Mechanics Hall so we are meeting at a new location for a short time.

We are still meeting on Wednesday's, 6 for 6:30pm start but we will be at the St Peters Hall on the corner of Church and High Streets in Eaglehawk.  At this stage we look like being there until early September.

NEW Rotary Leadership Institute Program FOR DISTRICT 9800
FIRST METROPOLITAN COURSE starts Monday EVENING August 3rd, SOUTH MELBOURNE
In response to repeated feedback over the past two years from Rotarians about having Rotary training programs on weekend days, the District 9800 Rotary Leadership Institute has developed a new evening program that focusses on much greater interaction and engagement to enhance the learning experience for all participants.
This outstanding program provides Rotarians with an extensive “overview” of what Rotary is all about, and is especially valuable for anyone who might be considering taking on a responsibility on any club committee.
Our experience is that not only newer but more experienced Rotarians learn from this program.
RLI has been a successful way for clubs to encourage members to learn more about “how Rotary works” and from the consistent feedback we receive, not only does it do that but the way the program engages people in the learning experience gets participants involved in their own learning in an enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere.
Then new program has been reduced in time so that the overall time commitment to attend the sessions has been reduced by 33%.
The 2015 program starts in three weeks. It involves attending four Monday night sessions at the Continuing Education Centre in Montague St, South Melbourne, with ample off-street parking.
The sessions kick off at 6pm for registration and then the learning starts at 6.30pm till 9.30 pm with a dinner break included.
Details about the program content and a registration form have been forwarded to your Club President. 
RLI also provides a great vehicle for Clubs to use for “succession planning” to encourage their future Club Leaders to attend and learn all about the mechanics of Rotary in a way that broadens their knowledge, enables them to meet and interact with other Rotarians whilst at the same time giving them ideas about how they can implement what they are and have learnt back in their clubs.
This program is highly regarded, facilitated by a very experienced and capable team and well worth attending.

Report from Camp Getaway  Hello Supporters

Thank you for another 2 successful days of hard work this Friday 17th and Saturday 18 July.

The list of achievements is as follows:  Fit pressed metal sections to main LVL beams to take fascia cladding Fit temporary perimeter

handrails around roof so that plumbers can work safely Construct the panel link between the dining hall and new kitchen

Work on preparation for sheeting the external wall of the link Fit 2 sheets to the temporary wall to secure the kitchen until stage 2 is built

Mount the sub board, run main cable from switchboard to sub board and liven up Fit off all power points and lights Work on fire alarm system

Fit roof sheeting and flash off one penetration Insulate the box gutter Finish installation of the second heater and run both heaters

Reinstall sliding doors between halls Check for white ants and fit signs in Dorm 2

AND WHILST THERE ON SATURDAY

PDG Des and Judy Hosking along with IPP Brad Saunders AND THE MAN BEHIND IT ALL Claude Bury, all Williamstown Rotarians,

presented Camp Getaway with a new defibrillator. With the special pads Williamstown will also provide, this defibrillator will be suitable

for all children as well as adults.

On Friday there were 8 volunteers and Saturday 11 Volunteers

remove perimeter rails and scaffold dig Triple Interceptor Trap ( grease  ) and put in place, connect both ends of previously laid sewer

pipe to grease trap and sewer pour a pad for the hot water service fit sink and drain trays run hot and cold water and drains

run gas lines finish off flashing temporary wall fit swampy air conditioner and run water to it including drain from swampy to sewer,

fit air diverter to ceiling fit cowl to exhaust stack fit hood in kitchen to exhaust stack fit new stove Finish any electrical work

clean up site When you look at it, I may have been a bit ambitious but it is a goal to aim towards

In beautiful Bendigo the conference will focus on inspiring international, national and local speakers.  The weekend will be fun, relevant and provide insights into programs and projects that through partnerships develop resilient, harmonious communities.  Rotarians will be informed, entertained and dined whilst networking and sharing ideas to improve communities at home and abroad

With growing community concern in regard to the ethics of organisations operating within their communities and internationally; the Conference will explore both the relevance of Rotary’s own 4-way Test and the need to influence ethics as a cornerstone of leadership, personal and professional development in vocational, educational, community, youth and business settings.

JOINED UP PARTNERSHIP

Rotarians rarely work alone and developing partnerships with community groups is desirable when seeking to achieve outstanding results.  This is obvious I the successful projects around the world that have improved the lives of a countless number of people.  The End Polio Campaign is a wonderful example of “joined up Rotary partnerships”.

Through the insight of fabulous speakers the possibility of increased partnerships will be explored.

OUR YOUTH OUR FUTURE

Australia’s future is its youth – but their future depends on the opportunities to develop with what, we as a community provide.  Rotary works extensively with young people; from all spectrums of life to help develop their full potential.  The conference will explore the many facets of this aspect of Rotary with the aim being a simple one – a better future for all.

GOLDEN ROTARY MOMENTS

Rotarians have achieved many remarkable feats – the near eradication of Polio throughout the world, bringing fresh water and sanitation to millions previously lacking access to such amenities as well as countless projects within local communities.  The 2016 Rotary International District 9800 Conference will showcase the achievements Rotary has made in the past year with our partners o make the world a better place

FUN, FELLOWSHIP and NETWORKING

On Friday night there will be an optional Welcome Cocktail Party, Saturday night will feature the Gala Dinner and on Sunday night there is to for Club / Cluster dinners.  The Monday public holiday will provide an opportunity to choose or several of the local Bendigo tourist attractions to visit before heading home.

Breakout sessions will be a feature of the Conference as well as the Rotary Marketplace; both providing an opportunity to learn more about Rotary and the projects of Clubs in District 9800

There are several activities scheduled in Bendigo on the same weekend as the Conference so we urge you to book your accommodation or to ask your OnToConference Chair to arrange a block booking of rooms

A duck goes into a furniture store and says 'got any duck food?'

An accountant, on a drive to his folks for thanksgiving, got lost on a rural Wyoming road. He sees a local and stops.
"Does this road go to Laramie?"
"I dunno"
"Is there a place near here with phone reception so I can make a call?"
"I dunno"
"well how about a nearby drugstore or town - can you tell me how far away one might be?"
"nope"
"You don't know much do you?"
"Nope - but I aint lost".

 

Johnny proudly drove his new VW Beetle convertible into town and had his shiny banjo nestling in the back seat.
He had walked half way around the block from the parked car when he realised that the sunny weather had prompted him to leave the hood down... with his banjo in the back.
He ran all the way back to his car, but it was too late...
another five banjos had been dumped in the car.

 

A Cumbrian farmer's dog goes missing and he is inconsolable.
His wife says to him, "why don't you put an ad in the paper to get him back".
The farmer does this, but after two weeks, no phone calls, the dog is still missing.
"What did you write in the paper?" asked his wife.

"Here boy," said the farmer.
