Industry Visit- Wednesday November 29th- Bendigo GovHub
There will be an Industry visit to the GovHub on Wednesday November 29th. We will meet on the corner of Lyttleton Terrace and St. Andrew's Avenue at 7.15AM. There is plenty of parking, however restrictions begin at 8.30AM by which time the tour will be finished.There is a need to register with your name and phone number. There will be a list circuting at our next two meetings for this. Family members are most welcome. Members are invited to adjourn to The Good Loaf for breakfast after the tour.

Guest Speaker- Anthony Petherbridge
Anthony is the Manager of Strategic Planning with the City of Greater Bendigo.
With the cancellation of the Commonwealth Games and the potential gains for social housing in Bendigo members were keen to hear about the Council's approach to the housing crisis. Provision is possible through public, community and housing in partnerships with private developers. Public housing is totally managed by the government and community housing is managed by not for profit organisations. There are 3,000 houses needed in the Loddon, Campaspe, Mallee region.
There is no mandated requirement for developers to set aside 10-15% of a development for affordable housing. The work that was once undertaken by the Housing Commission is now managed by Homes Victoria. Planning permits for projects funded under Victoria's Big Housing Build are issued by the Planning Minister. It is hoped that this will speed up the approval process. A less regulated environment such as there being no requirement for a permit for a "granny flat" is an attempt to make provision easier. Bendigo has an allocation of $85 million from the Big Housing Build.
Anthony expressed reservations about the new arrangements for the issuing of permits. In reality many of the delays are often to do with the work of state government agencies such as the EPA and Vicroads not local councils. Furthermore there is a real risk of local urban design frameworks, streetscape and nearby buildings of historical significance being overlooked with the Minister issuing permits. This is part of the City's advocacy for Bendigo. The current submissions for Bendigo are Virginia Hill, St Andrew's, McKenzie Street, YWCA (Townsend Street), the Athletes Village and Chum Street.
Anthony provided some research data to demonstrate the acute situation faced by many people in Bendigo. There are over 18,000 households in Bendigo living on less than $42K annually. Of these about 25% are experiencing financial stress because their rent or mortgage payments are in excess of 30% of income. Another 18,000 households live on income between $42K and $90K. The percentage of suitable rental properties for low income families has dropped from 80% in 2000 to 20% in 2021. Anthony provided a very interactive session on a topic which is of great concern to members.

PRESIDENTS’ REPORT – 22 November, 2023
Anthony Petheridge delivered an interactive presentation on the city’s strategic planning, and we look forward to inspect the new city office premises this coming Wednesday (see calendar and last newsletter for details).
As mentioned during the AGM, please consider the opportunity to put your hand up now for one of the positions still available. No board = no club, unfortunately. Thank you, John Harkin for chairing the AGM.
Christmas cakes and puddings. Bendigo South RC is selling Christmas cakes and puddings as a fundraiser for the Rotary Foundation. Please contact Ray if you would like to purchase any since he is compiling a list to be sent on next month to Bendigo South. Puddings are $20 each, cakes are $22 each (reusable tin) or $20 each (cardboard box).
Upcoming events (see calendar) include: Toyota Golf at Belvoir Park Golf Club (Friday morning 8 December), Cluster Foundation Dinner (Friday evening 8 December), and our industry visit this Wednesday morning.

Eaglehawk Rotary book shop
Eaglehawk Rotary's Book Shop opening hours are Wed: 10am - 1pm; and Saturday 10am - noon.
The book shop is located at 30 High St, Eaglehawk just a little way past the traffic lights, on the LHS.
A good place to pick up a good second-hand book, as Toni and I have done a couple of times.
