Editor's Comment:
Please note that you aren't receiving the same Bulletin twice.
Please delete the one that was sent last night (Sunday 3rd.)  and replace it with this one.  The Bulletin Editor is human and does make mistakes. He left out some important information that needed to be circulated to our members before this week's meeting and made the executive decision to send out an updated version of Bulletin 33. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Co President's report
Lavinia Gilliland, a Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedic, gave us a fascinating insight in the technology, training and real-life experiences of staff working in Air Ambulance Victoria (see notes of her presentation below). Our thanks go to her proud parents, John and Barbara Cannon, for being able to arrange for a busy Lavinia to spare some time with us this morning.
The environmental committee has worked out details for the BBQ at the upcoming Sustainability Festival on Sunday 17 March. Please contact Stew Annan to advise him if you can be available on the day to help out.
This week we implemented the minimum spend of $10 per member at our meeting venue in order to cover the basic costs of operation. Any shortfall will be covered by the club. We hope the trial of this arrangement proves to be very satisfactory for both our club and Peppergreen Farm management.

In the meantime, we look forward to this week’s meeting.

Co-Presidents Ray & Adrian.
Guest speaker - 28th February
Guest Speaker- Lavinia Gilliland

Lavinia is a paramedic with the Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA), a support service of Ambulance Victoria. Lavinia was a nurse before joining Ambulance Victoria seventeen years ago. There are fifty MICA paramedics in Victoria using four planes and five helicopters. Women commenced work in this field six years ago. The service includes transfers from hospitals across the state with coverage extending to southern NSW, eastern South Australia and northern Tasmania. A pilot, an assistant and an intensive care paramedic make up the standard crew. In some circumstances a doctor or another paramedic is needed.

MICA paramedics are required to have ten years experience as a paramedic. Further training includes medical tests, applying skills at heights up to 4,000 feet and safety training in all kinds of environments. Lavinia outlined what was required for survival in remote areas, working in alpine areas and training for helicopter underwater escapes. There are different sets of equipment and clothing for each environment. A video showing the six hour winching of an injured rock climber brought home to members the dangers involved in the work as well as the skill and dedication of the crew.

The work of MICA paramedics involves developing partnerships with hospitals which vary a lot in size and service provision. There is also a need to partner with paramedic ground crews. There are clear protocols in place for the management of emergencies where more than one agency is involved. Emergency support, treatment and transfers include areas such as road trauma, heart attack, stroke and search and rescue. Lavinia noted that sometimes a component of the comprehensive training regime may only be implemented once a year. There is always a need to be prepared for any contingency.

Lavinia could not be of such service to the community without the support of her family. A highlight of her presentation was a beautiful photo of her son, Finley's, first day at school. Physical fitness and proper attention to professional supervision for psychological wellbeing are important aspects of the work. Ambulance Victoria is very attentive in providing this support. Lavinia loves her work and although she would enjoy undertaking an internship in the future she is happy to do what she is doing for the moment.

Lavinia is a wonderful example of a person who dedicates herself to the service of the community for those who find themselves in emergency situations. It was most informative to hear all that is involved in this service. We appreciate Lavinia's dedication and her presence with us.

Bgo Sandhurst - Bgo South social lawn bowls
Last Tuesday evening 40 members, partners and friends gathered at the Strathfieldsaye Bowls Club for the social bowls event of the year. Those present had a "roll and a giggle" for about an hour followed by a pizza supper.
Congratulations to Kerrie Lougoon who won the prize for the nearest to the ditch.

On behalf of our club members, we would like to thank Stan and Rhonda Hendy and Phil and Jenny Lethbridge (Bgo South) for arranging a most enjoyable evening of social lawn bowls last Tuesday. They worked with Bendigo South Rotary Club and the Strathfieldsaye Bowling Club to put together a really well organized event featuring plenty of laughs and inter-club fellowship.

There were some good bowls and not-so-good bowls laid down, but as we weren’t playing for sheep stations, it didn’t really matter where the bowls finished up (we
think ……). It was good fun, and we hope to run this event again sometime next year.

Clean up Australia Day contribution.

Clean up Australia Day on Sunday 3 March saw four of our members supporting the North Bendigo Landcare Group with cleanup effort along the Bendigo Creek corridor in the Leans Road area.  Madeleine, Stu, Neville and I spent the morning collecting rubbish along the waterway.

Rotary Regionalisation Pilot - Next step

Our Co-Presidents are planning to attend a meeting on the Thursday 7th March which will guide the next stage of the pilot program.

The next steps in the Regionalisaton Pilot are for the District Team to seek Club support in implementing the key elements of Rotary Community Group (RCG) collaboration and Rotary Community Leader (RCL) appointment.

Our Club leadership team is seeking members input to the key questions that will be discussed at the meeting. There will be a brief discussion at this Wednesday mornings club meeting, so please review the questions below and give some thought to possible answers.  This will provide our team with some guidance when they attend the Thursday meeting.

The detail that the District Team need feedback for comes from the core questions:
• What do you want to work on together?
• What sort of leadership and support would help you succeed?
• What arrangements will work for you?

Input from all Club members will help our leadership team to best represent the views of our members at the Thursday meeting.
If you can't be at Wednesday mornings Club meeting and have some thoughts on the above questions, please send your thoughts by email to the Co-Presidents Ray and Adrian.

Camp Getaway working bee - Saturday 9th March
With our very informative and jam-packed meeting today (28/2), I did not get a chance to let members and friends know that there is a working bee at Camp Getaway, Axedale on Saturday March 9th. Yes, it is the long weekend and there are many other activities occurring.

Keilor Rotary will be at the camp over the weekend doing a variety of tasks. If anyone has a couple of hours available on the Saturday, I'm sure the help would be much appreciated. Tasks could include garden maintenance, site clean up of the new tennis courts, minor repair works, etc.

We get great value out of the Camp Getaway site with RYLA, RYPEN, etc, etc, so it is good to give some time to keep the camp functioning well.

I will check on the availability of any potential attendees at the meeting next week.

Many thanks
Paul Kirkpatrick
