Co-President's report
Co-Presidents Report for 27th August 2025

Colleen and President Cathie spoke to Year 10 students from Marist College about volunteering and what Rotary is – including the Youth programs we support.

Co-Presidents Allie and Cathie attended the RC Bendigo Gala Ball for their 100th anniversary. A poem was written especially for the event by David Judge which Allie read out.

A Rotary Community Group zoom meeting was held with Club Presidents last week to discuss inter-club activities. It was decided to have some meetings that focus on the various avenues of Service and how the Clubs can connect and support each other.

The next meeting will be 19th September at 7pm to discuss membership. All members involved in Membership committees will be invited to attend. The intention is to give the members opportunities to connect, learn from and support each other in this area.

A future meeting will be arranged to discuss requirements around Risk Management. A District representative will be asked to participate in this one to facilitate accurate information is shared.

Joint social actives were also talked about and there was general support for this. It will be up to Clubs to make the connections for activities.

Jim Rolfe is organising a joint meeting between our club and the Rotary Club of Bendigo to be held 9th Dec. They have a very interesting speaker arranged. More details when they are finalised. Partners will be welcome to attend.

Jim has also booked the Marong Hotel for our Christmas activity, so put Dec 14th in your diaries. More details to come.

Doug and Kevin Reade will be meeting with the new CEO of the Wool and Sheep show to review the event this year.

The donation we made to the Queensland flood victims has been completed through RAWCS.

Paul Kirkpatrick reported on some outcomes from this year’s Winter Night Shelter project – 2 people have been able to gain employment and several others were able to get repairs done to their vehicles as a consequence of participating in the program.

Kevin Reade reported on our involvement with the Swap Meet this year. We will be running a BBQ but not in our usual area due to the building works going on. We will also be selling ice this year. Keep the 15th of Nov free for the BBQ.

Erika Salathiel from the Latrobe Uni gave an insight into the “Aspire” program. It has many benefits for Rotary should we decide to make use of the program.

Allie and Cathie.

Guest Speaker: Golden Dragon Museum Chinese Legacy, including the Toi Shan story
Guest Speaker- Erika Salathiel Latrobe Aspire Program

Erika is the La Trobe University Student Recruitment Officer and in this position provides oversight of the Aspire Program. Erika has a background in Paramedicine and recently moved to Bendigo from Queensland before taking up this role. The Aspire Program offers pathways including but not limited to ATAR scores for University entry. In the context of Rotary community engagement is seen as important criteria for tertiary entrance. Early entry offers provide reassurance for students and alleviate the stress associated with "all or nothing" Year 12 examination results. The Aspire Program has contributed significantly to the tertiary and university aspirations of rural students.

The Aspire program is made up of three components. The Aspire Community Impact offers students credit for their engagement in community activity. The ATAR entry score for these students is less than what normally would be required. The Aspire Academic Impact stream offers recognition for achievement at Year 11 and provides a "fall back" option for students entering Year 12. The Aspire Everyday Impact stream offers Diploma options to students less capable academically. Erika noted that students in this category often build in confidence and transfer to degree courses. La Trobe is to be congratulated on the recognition and value placed on different learning styles.

Application for Community impacts includes a written summary of the community work undertaken and the impact of that work. Students are encouraged to include the names and contact details of referees who have knowledge of their involvement. Community involvement as long as it is voluntary can include social justice initiatives, coaching, contributions to wider family and outreach to the lonely and isolated such as those in Nursing Homes. Written applications are marked and included as part of the application process. Erika noted that engagement in our Club's meetings before school would be a very worthwhile community activity for senior secondary students.

Cathie and Colleen commented on how well the Aspire initiatives were received by the year ten students at Marist College when they visited last week. There are mutual benefits for our club and the students. We have the opportunity to be ambassadors for this initiative and with our focus on youth there are many possibilities of ways we can partner with this demographic in service of the community. We thank Erika for her visit and we look forward to ongoing dialogue with La Trobe and the Secondary Schools in our community.

2025 Mystery Tour

BWNS thanks Rotary
The Bendigo Winter Night Shelter (BWNS) deeply thanks each and every Rotary member who has been involved in the considerable task of lugging firewood logs, running them across a saw bench and loading them for delivery to Koolamurt Scout Camp.

One of the BWNS goals is building relationships with guests.  Sitting around the fire has been such an important way of building these relationships. Every night guests and volunteers have gathered around the fire using wood you provided.

Your kindness and hard work providing firewood has directly contributed to the outcomes of the BWNS 2025 season when it concludes on 14 September 2025:
  • 1000 total guest stays keeping vulnerable people out of the cold winter
  • 2000 total meals provided
  • 54 different registered guests using the Shelter over winter
  • 5 guests have found permanent accommodation through connections made at the Shelter
  • 2 guests have found employment though connections made at the Shelter other guests have received car service/repairs through connections made at the Shelter
Thankyou for stepping forward for the most vulnerable in our community.  BWNS is humbled by your longstanding support.
Chris Dalton, Chairperson
